So, you wanna play online roulette, do you? What type of roulette do you want to play?
Eh? I can hear you say, “Isn’t roulette just roulette?”
Not anymore. These days, roulette comes in many different guises. You can still play the classic games if you prefer, but there are now plenty of intriguing and interesting roulette games online. Just like your Friday night curry, you can have it mild, spicy, or burn-the-roof-of-your-mouth hot.
The choice is yours. I’m just here to show you what your options are. And with that said, let me proceed to do exactly that.
Playing Classic Roulette Online
If you’re a roulette veteran looking for something new and interesting, you can skip this section. It’s a brief recap of the classic online roulette games for new players.
Classic roulette is the type you’ll find at every casino in the world. You’ve seen the red and black wheel in lots of movies and more than a few TV ads. However, did you know that in roulette there are different versions of this well-known casino table game?
Yes, that’s right. There’s American Roulette, and there’s European Roulette:
American Roulette is defined by having two zeros on the wheel.
European Roulette, by contrast, only has one zero pocket.
The numbers on the wheel are arranged in a slightly different order, too, but that’s of no real consequence to you when you’re playing. What really matters is that extra zero on the American Roulette wheel.
Why does it matter? Because it gives the casino a much bigger advantage. That’s never good.
The casino’s advantage on any game is known as the house edge. It’s a percentage, and it tells you how much the casino makes on the game.
In American Roulette, the house edge is 5.26%.
When you play European Roulette, the house edge is 2.7%.
That’s quite a difference, isn’t it? Over dozens of spins, it certainly adds up, and it will be you as a player giving that extra dosh over to the casino.
That’s your first roulette lesson—always play on a European Roulette wheel.
When it comes to playing roulette, I don’t need to cover old ground. We already have an excellent guide to playing roulette here. I suggest you read that if you want to brush up.
Enter the French
You’ll find that when it comes to online roulette, playing the French variant has significant advantages.
You’ll play this game on a European Roulette wheel, but the table looks a little bit different. Unusually, the wheel sits in the middle, and the table is split into two.
What’s most interesting about French Roulette is the two rules which help players out. They kick in when you lose an even-money bet because the ball lands in a zero pocket.
En Prison – This rule holds your bet until the next spin. It will remain there, and you’ll have a chance to win it back on the next spin.
La Partage – With this rule, you’ll get half of your bet back, and the house will keep the other half.
Knowing these game intricacies can make all the difference to your success as a roulette player. That’s why it’s worth reading posts like this.
Live Dealer Roulette
When you play roulette in a digital casino, you’ll play against a random number generator. This is a program which generates millions of numbers per second, and it determines the results of honest online casino games.
However, many players still don’t trust these digital games. It wouldn’t be like us Brits to be sceptical, would it?!
As well as this inherent mistrust of the machines, digital roulette games can be lonely. Some introverted players prefer them, but lots of others prefer a more social gaming experience.
That’s where live dealer games come in. When you choose them, you can play against gamblers from all over the world. Live dealers entertain you as you play, congratulate you when you win, spin the wheel, and have fun with you.
There are now lots of companies providing live dealer roulette games. Some of the most trustworthy include:
Extreme Live Gaming
If one of these companies powers the live roulette game you’re thinking of playing, you can relax in the knowledge that it’s a safe, fair game. Some casinos also run their own live dealer games, but I advise you to assess those on a case-by-case basis.
There are also some interesting variants of live roulette games. I’ll cover some of these in more detail below, but I wanted to mention the most outstanding games first.
Salon Prive Roulette
You can also play live roulette streamed from the floors of some of the best casinos in the world. From the massive Foxwoods Resort in Connecticut to our very own Hippodrome Casino in London, to the Platinum Casino in Bucharest, you can zoom around the world with a few clicks and try out these live roulette games at your leisure.
If you already know a little bit about roulette, you’ll know that the highest paying bet is on single numbers. While you only have a 2.7% probability of winning such a bet on a European roulette wheel, the payout is 35/1, so it’s worth trying for if you’re feeling lucky.
Evolution Gaming has supercharged the experience of betting on single numbers with the introduction of Lightning Roulette. In it, up to five numbers are randomly chosen after you’ve placed your bets, and these numbers are linked to multipliers of up to 500x.
If you’re lucky enough to have bet on one of them, and that number wins, you can win a massive multiplier of between 50x and 500x.
I did tell you that some of these games could be pretty intense!
Playtech has long been one of the leaders in online casino games, and it wasn’t about to let Evolution Gaming steal the show with games like Lightning Roulette. This variant is Playtech’s answer to it.
This one takes place in an impressive-looking futuristic studio, but that isn’t the main attraction. That would be the multipliers of up to 500x that apply to as many as five random numbers of the board.
Yes, Playtech has copied Evolution’s original game. It has a different atmosphere and a few cool effects, but at its core, it’s the same game as Lightning Roulette. I wanted to include it on this list of roulette games because it’s equally impressive.
If you prefer Playtech games or just want to compare this one against Lightning Roulette, it’s worth a try.
Salon Prive Roulette
If you don’t have a major bankroll to play with, you can forget about this variant. This is a private live roulette game specifically for high rollers. It’s a VIP roulette game in every way.
The Salon Prive game studio is pure luxury. You can even ask for a different host if you’re not feeling the one you’re assigned. This game is all about catering to your desires.
It will cost you an eye-watering £1,500 per spin to play, but hey, if you’ve have the money to bet that much, I salute you. You’ll need to have a minimum balance of £6,000 before you can play.
I’ll freely admit that this game is way out of my league, but if you’ve got a big enough bankroll, go ahead and give it a shot.
Age of the Gods Roulette
If you’re a regular slots player, you might recognize the Age of the Gods brand. It’s one of Playtech’s most successful progressive jackpot slot franchises, and yes, this roulette game is based on it.
This is a digital game, so you can forget about those live dealers for now. However, this variant offers something that none of them can — a shot at winning a progressive jackpot.
This roulette variant uses a European Roulette wheel, but there’s an extra “bonus pocket”, so the house edge is up there with American Roulette games. You’ll also see the Age of the Gods bonus side bet on the roulette table.
If you make this bet, and if the ball lands in the bonus pocket, you’ll get three spins on a slot machine. You can win up to 100x your wager. If Lady Luck is with you, the progressive jackpot round will trigger, and you’ll have a shot at four Age of the Gods progressive jackpots. I’m talking about a six-figure sum if you win the biggest one.
As a fan of both slot machines and roulette, I love this game. It’s a cracking concept!
I haven’t covered every single roulette variant in this post. However, I have included the best ones, and if you get started with these, you’ll fall in love with this classic casino table game just like I did about a decade ago.
Roulette is a game of pure luck. Sure, it helps to know what the odds and payouts of different bets are, and there are a few roulette betting systems that players like to use, but in the end, Lady Luck is the queen of this game.
You can find the above variants at some of our approved roulette sites. I wish you the best of luck!
