What Are Megaways Slots?

Slots companies are always coming up with new and innovative ways to outdo each other. Of course, they want to convince more players to play their games, and the best way to do this is by adding new and exciting features which players can’t find elsewhere.

Every once in a while, a slots software company comes up with a truly revolutionary idea. For example, when NetEnt released the Avalanche Reels feature in Gonzo’s Quest, rivals scrambled to copy it, tweak it, and implement it into their own games. There are now hundreds of games with features similar to this.

More recently, Big Time Gaming hit upon the idea for a Megaways game engine, and instead of waiting for the copycats to do what they do, BTG decided to license their new game engine to other slots companies. So far, Megaways slots have been a runaway success, and old games are being re-released, supercharged with this game engine built into them.

I’m going to explain what Megaways slots are, how the game engine works, and what the best Megaways slot games are to date.

How Do Megaways Slot Games Work?

To understand the unique game engine behind Megaways slot games, it’s important to understand how regular slot paylines work.

A game like Starburst has 10 paylines. That means there are 10 patterns you can make to win payouts in this game. How big those payouts will be depends on what symbols you land on the paylines, but the paylines underpin the game. If you land the winning symbols anywhere else, they won’t pay.

Most games have a fixed number of paylines such as 10 or 20. In many games, you can adjust the number of paylines you want to activate. This allows you more control over how much you bet per spin.

Megaways slots are a whole different kettle of fish. They differ from regular slots in three key ways:

  1. There are no paylines as such. You make wins by landing matching symbols adjacent to each other.
  2. There are a huge number of ways to win. For example, in Sweet Success Megways slot, there are 117,649 ways to win.
  3. The number of ways to win is decided randomly on each spin by the Megaways game engine. Each spin will be different.

Most Megaways games also have six reels as opposed to the five reels which most slot games have. There’s also usually an extra mini-reel at the top of the normal reel set.

As you can probably piece together, Megaways slots have enormous winning potential. In many of the games, you can win up to £250,000 from a single spin. Wouldn’t that be something?!

The Best Megaways Slot Machines

As a slots enthusiast, I can say with my hand on my heart that the Megaways slots are some of the most exciting games I have ever played. I’m also glad to see some old games making a comeback with a Megaways makeover. The new game engine, and in many cases the extra features, give these classic games a new lease of life.

Below, you’ll find my favourite Megaways slot games so far.

88 Fortunes Megaways

This is one of the greatest Asian-themed slots of all time. Bally Technologies has re-released it with a souped-up Megaways game engine. It has six reels and 117,649 ways to win maximum.

88 Fortunes Megaways also has cascading reels, pay-to-play gold symbols, a picking game, and a free spins feature. You could win 15 free spins with an unlimited multiplier.

Legacy of Ra Megaways

You didn’t seriously think that they’d release an entire new type of slot game and not include an Egyptian-inspired classic, did you? This Blueprint Gaming classic has six reels and up to 15,625 ways to win.

As with the original, this game is very simple in terms of its features. It’s got a free spins bonus round with up to 50 free spins up for grabs. Right before the spins begin, one symbol will be randomly selected and will expand on the reels during the feature. If you can’t trigger the free spins, you can pay 100x your stake to enter it.

Raging Rhino Megaways

This was one of my favourite online slots when it was released back in the day. WMS have put it out again with six reels and up to 117,649 ways to make winning combos.

The bonus features include cascading reels, free spins with a progressive multiplier for cascades, and wild symbols with multipliers of up to 5x. This is a high variance slot game, so it might take a while to score a big win. But, if it comes with a wild multiplier or as part of a multi-win avalanche, it will be well worth it. This may be my favourite Megaways slot machine.

Genie Jackpots Megaways

There are plenty of Aladdin-themed games online, but few have the sort of power this one does. With six reels, up to 15,625 ways to win, and lots of bonus features, it’s one of the most engaging Megaways slots.

The genie can come to life on any spin and award four game modifiers, extra wilds, wild reels, mystery symbols leading to guaranteed wins, and extra bonus symbols. There are also regular features such as locking wilds, free spins with a progressive multiplier, and free respins with winning symbols locked in place. If you love feature-rich games, this is the Megaways slot for you.

Tiki Treasures Megaways

Yes, there are Megaways slots with progressive jackpots, and this is one of them. It’s a six-reel game with up to 117,649 ways to win. It’s one of the few Megaways games so far to offer a progressive jackpot.

This game has three bonus features. First, you’ve got the cascading reels feature, and you also have the free spins feature. You could win 15 free spins with a 1x multiplier, 10 free spins with a 5x multiplier, or 15 free spins with a 1x multiplier. Cascading reels are also in play during the free spins. Finally, you have the randomly-triggered jackpot round. If you collect matching crown symbols, you can win the progressive jackpot.

Common Megaways Slot Features

All slots have bonus features. However, I’ve noticed that almost all of the Megaways slots have similar features throughout. It doesn’t seem to matter which company has released the game. In the majority of cases, two or more of these features will be part of the game.

  • Avalanche Reels – When you make a winning combination, the winning symbols will disappear, and new ones will replace them. If you’re lucky, you could win multiple times from one spin since the avalanches keep coming as long as you make new wins.
  • Free Spins – Most slot games have a free spins feature, so this is self-explanatory. However, in Megaways slots, the avalanche reels feature is usually in play during the free spins. In most cases, each time you create a new avalanche win, a progressive multiplier will increase by 1x, making the next win even bigger.
  • Pay-to-Play – In many Megaways games, you can pay to enter the features. For example, White Rabbit Megaways slot, you can pay 100x your stake to trigger the free spins feature.
  • Bonus Wilds – Wild symbols have a special place in many of the Megaways slots I have played. They can migrate, expand, stick on the reels, and deliver juicy win multipliers.

Your Questions About Megaways Slots

  • Are Megaways slots expensive to play?

Not really. You can play most of them from just £0.20 per spin. In fact, the upper betting limits tend to be capped at £100 maximum, so they’re not designed for super high-stakes players by any means.

  • Do Megaways slots have lower RTPs?

Almost all of the games tell you what the RTP is in the pay table, which I like. Most of them are in and around the 96% to 97% mark. That’s average. Sometimes, when you trigger certain bonus features, the RTP changes. Again, you can find this information in the pay tables.
