Our Game Guide for Roulette

Roulette Guide

If you travel to any casino in the world, you will notice that nearly all of them offer the popular game known as roulette. This game features a wheel with red and black stripes all over it, a little white ball that dictates which number is the winner, and a felt table covered with numbers and betting options.

After all the bets have been placed, the dealer will spin the little white ball around the wheel. Once it lands on a number, the dealer will place a marker over the winning number, rake in all the losing bets, and then pay whoever bet on the winning number.

On the surface, this game seems very simple. However, we will now dive deeper into the world of roulette and explore things such as the best places to play, the different types of bets that are available and the strategies that can be used.

Best Roulette Casino Sites

Brick-and-mortar casinos are not the only places that provide the opportunity to play roulette. There are over 1000 internet casinos and it's nearly impossible to find one that does not contain roulette in its library of games.

If you look at nearly every internet casino, you will find that not only do they offer roulette, they offer many different variations of roulette. This is the main advantage of the internet because you can find games like French roulette, bonus roulette, rapid roulette and California roulette.

Below we have listed some of our top sites for playing roulette on the internet.

When we compiled this list, we did not just randomly pick the names out of a hat. We heavily analyzed factors such as reliability, customer service, promotional programs, and roulette game selection so that we would be able to weed out all of the weak options. Feel free to browse through some of these casinos to find a good spot where you can get the roulette wheels rolling!

Online Roulette Vs. Casino Roulette

When deciding whether to play roulette online or in a casino, you must be able to weigh the pros and cons of each. We feel that online roulette holds a slight advantage over casino roulette for a variety of reasons. Whenever we have the urge to play roulette, we rarely go to a land-based casino to scratch this itch.

The first perk of playing roulette online is that you don't have to drive all the way to a casino and waste time walking and a bunch of money on things like gas and parking. Online roulette is always available at your fingertips if you have a computer or even a smartphone as a ton of online casinos offer apps that will allow you to play roulette on your smartphone.

A second advantage of playing roulette online is that you can play for much smaller stakes than most brick-and-mortar casinos will allow. You will be able to bet as little as one dollar per round at most online roulette wheels, while the land-based casinos routinely have a 10-dollar minimum bet per round.

A third reason why online roulette is better is the promotions and bonuses that are available. In a brick-and-mortar casino, you are lucky if you get to park your car for free. The only thing that they are likely to give you in most casinos while you play roulette is free drinks. Internet casinos regularly offer promotions to all of their players such as deposit bonuses, cashback rewards, and leaderboard competitions for prizes.

What Are Important Features of a Roulette Site?

There are so many online casinos that offer roulette that it can be tough to differentiate between the quality of all of them. In order to do this, there are some important features of these casinos that you need to examine before you know if they are a respectable place to play roulette or not.

The first and most important thing that we look for in a site that offers roulette is reliability.

If you cannot trust a site, then there is no point in playing there.

We like to make sure these sites are licensed by a reliable gambling commission such as the UK Gaming Commission or the Malta Gambling Authority.

We also like to make sure that the site's random number generator has been audited by a popular auditing company such as eCogra so that the games are as fair as possible. If the roulette wheel is programmed to hit certain numbers more or less often than usual, the games will be totally unfair to the players.

Another feature of a roulette site that we would want to play on is a set of promotions that cater to roulette players only. This is somewhat rare to find, but it does exist. Finding a promotion that caters to the specific game that you want to play is a great way to get the best bang for your buck.

American vs. European Roulette

Around the world, there are many variations of roulette to play, especially if we are talking about internet casinos. However, there are two variations that are almost guaranteed to be included in every serious online casino's game library. These two variations are called American roulette and European roulette.

What is the difference between these two? The answer is zero. Actually, the answer is double zero. An American roulette wheel features a 0 and a 00 on it, while a European roulette wheel only contains one 0. The numbers on each wheel are also arranged in a different order.

What do these differences mean? Well, the fact that the numbers are arranged in a different order means nothing and does not affect the outcome of the game whatsoever.

On the other hand, the fact that European roulette does not contain a 00 is extremely important, because it provides the gamblers with better odds than American roulette does.

This is simple mathematics because the payout rewards are the same for each number, but there are fewer numbers to choose from.

For example, the odds of picking the right number on a European roulette wheel is 37 to one, and the payout for hitting the right number is 35 to one. On an American roulette wheel, the odds of picking the correct number is 38 to one, but the payout for hitting the right number is still 35 to one. Therefore, it is easier to pick the correct number because you will be wrong less often compared to American roulette, but you will still receive the same payouts.

Tips for Beginners

Everybody is a beginner at some point in time, no matter what game we are talking about. For this reason, we decided to compile some quick tips to help all of the newbies who have never played roulette before.

For Sports BetsDon't bet with money you need

This advice holds true for every casino game, so we decided to include it here. Gambling is a dangerous pastime for those who decide to play with money that they truly need to pay bills or buy food.

Ideally, you want to play with money that you do not care about losing. Not everybody has disposable income, so therefore gambling is not for everyone. Before you begin playing, make sure that you are one of those people who can gamble and still sustain a healthy lifestyle.

For Sports BetsThe house has an edge

The unfortunate part about roulette is that, in the long run, the house has an advantage known as the house edge. This means that on any given day, you can beat the house, but if you play every day for years you have nearly zero chance of being a winner.

The main reason why playing roulette with money you truly need is not a good idea is due to this house edge. Sure, you will be able to win here and there. You might even win for a few months in a row. However, this is a small amount of time in the grand scheme of things and, eventually, the casino will come out on top no matter what strategy you use.

If numbers are more your style of communication, the house edge on a single-zero European roulette table is only 2.7%. The house edge of an American roulette table is 5.26%. Since the percentage of the house edge is higher on the American roulette table, players will lose money slower on the European roulette tables.

For Sports BetsAlways tip the dealer when you win

An unwritten rule of Las Vegas is that you should always tip your dealer after you win in any casino game. These dealers do not get paid a very high hourly wage, and the tips that they receive are a large part of their income.

As far as how much you should tip these dealers, usually one dollar is good enough. However, we recommend tipping more than one dollar if you win a giant pot or if you got very lucky to win.

Benefits of Playing Roulette

Just because all of the numbers on a roulette wheel add up to a devilish total of 666 does not mean that you should avoid playing this fancy game of chance. In fact, there are some benefits of playing this game that you may not have thought of before.

Entertainment

The first and most common benefit of playing roulette is entertainment. Most people come to a casino to be entertained, and this is exactly what a roulette wheel does.

The drama that builds as the little white ball spins around the roulette wheel creates a tense atmosphere that seems as if it can be cut with a knife. Once the ball lands in the home that chance and gravity have chosen for it, there is usually an uproar of celebration by those who selected the correct number.

This level of tension and celebration is similar to the entertainment that is received by attending popular sporting events. The difference is that the cost of attending sporting events is pretty high on average, and sporting events do not give you the opportunity to leave with more money than you walked in with.

Build Up Your Rewards Level

Whether you are playing roulette in a brick-and-mortar casino or on the internet, this benefit will apply to you. Both places will grant you rewards for frequent play, although the internet casinos will generally do a much better job of this.

When your rewards status increases, you will usually receive more perks from the casino than you did before. These perks could come in the form of things like cashback, deposit bonuses, or free spins. This means that grinding some long sessions in order to move up in status is usually worth the effort.

Find Out If Your Lucky Number is Truly Lucky

Almost everyone in the world has a lucky number, but what good is a lucky number if you never get to test out its level of luckiness? Well, luckily for you, the wait is over, and the test has arrived.

All you need to do is head to your preferred location for roulette games, and place a bunch of bets on your favorite number. If you have multiple lucky numbers, it is time to find out which one is the true hero!

Ease Your Mind

As a game of chance that is devoid of any deep levels of thinking, roulette can serve as a great mindless activity to take your mind off of things. While you are watching the little white ball go around the roulette wheel and hoping for it to land on your number, you are no longer thinking about the trials and tribulations that you faced earlier that day.

If you have a really good session and win some money, this immunity to depression could carry on throughout the rest of the day and possibly longer!

Types of Bets Available

When you encounter a roulette table for the first time ever, the sheer number of options for where to place your bets can be intimidating. To make this easier, we will break these up into two categories, the outside bets, and the inside bets.

Inside bets are any bets that are made on individual numbers that are located inside of the main rectangle on the roulette table. Outside bets are any bets that have a corresponding square located outside of the main rectangle on the roulette table.

Inside Bets

We will now explain exactly what every possible inside bet is, how to place your chip when making these bets, and what the payout odds are for each one. You are free to do more than one of these bets over the course of one spin, as long as you cover the minimum bet amount for that specific roulette table.

  • Straight Bet

A bet on a single number. The chip is placed inside of the specific square for that number. Payout odds are 35 to 1.

  • Split Bet

A bet on two adjacent numbers. The chip is placed on the edge of the square that is shared by the two numbers. Payout odds are 17 to 1.

  • Street Bet

A bet on three consecutive numbers in a horizontal line. The chip is placed on the edge of either end of the line. Payout odds are 11 to 1.

  • Corner Bet

A bet on four numbers that all share one corner. The chip is placed directly onto this common corner. Payout odds are 8 to 1.

  • Double Street Bet

A bet on six sequential numbers that make up two horizontal lines. The chip is placed on the outer corner that includes the two ends of the horizontal lines. Payout odds are 5 to 1.

  • Trio Bet

A bet on three different numbers that includes at least one zero square. Example: One chip is placed at the intersection of 0, 1, and 2. Payouts odds are 11.66 to 1.

  • Basket Bet (European Roulette Only)

A bet on 0, 1, 2, and 3 all at once. The chip is placed on the outer corner of 0 and 1. Payout odds are 6 to 1.

  • Top Line Bet (American Roulette Only)

    A bet on 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3 at the same time. Payout odds are 6 to 1.

Outside Bets

Now it's time to examine the other half of the roulette betting options known as the outside bets. Once again, you are allowed to make more than one of these bets per spin, you just need to bet more than the minimum outside bet limit on your specific roulette table. This minimum bet for outside bets is usually the same amount as the inside bets' minimum bet limit.

  • Low/High Bet

A low bet is aimed towards any number between 1 and 18. A high bet is pertaining to any number between 19 and 36. Zero and double-zero do not count for either side. Payout odds are 1 to 1.

  • Red/Black Bet

A red bet is aimed towards any number that is colored red, and a black bet is aimed towards any number that is colored black. Zero and double-zero do not count for either color since they are generally green. Payout odds are 1 to 1.

  • Even/Odd Bet

An even bet focuses on any number that is even, such as 2, 4, 6 or 8. An odd bet focuses on any number that is odd such as 1, 3, 5 or 7. Payout odds are 1 to 1.

  • Dozen Bet

A dozen bet is a bet on one of three groups of 12 consecutive numbers. For example, the 1st dozen bet is for any number between 1 through 12. Payout odds for this bet are 2 to 1.

  • Column Bet

A column bet is one that covers an entire vertical column of numbers, of which there are three. One example of a vertical column is 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 34. If any of these numbers hit, the payout odds will be 2 to 1.

  • Snake Bet

A snake bet is a very specific and rare bet which will wager on the numbers 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30 and 32. Some casinos will not honor this bet, but if they do, the payout odds will be 2 to 1. The chip will need to be placed right on the corner of the 34 square that is right next to the High Bet box.

Different Betting Systems and Strategies

Throughout the centuries, human beings have tried their hardest to beat the house edge in roulette. They created tons of strategies and systems before the era when computers could prove that they were not going to work out in the long run.

We will now take a look at some of these systems just for the sake of learning what not to do and how not to think. It is important to keep in mind that these strategies are not a reliable way to make a solid income, they are just theories that happen to be incorrect.

Martingale System

There are many types of different betting systems but the most popular one is the progressive betting system known as the Martingale System. Its popularity is probably based off of the fact that, for people who are not familiar with the laws of probability, it sounds like a great idea that will work. Sadly, like most systems, it is eventually going to end in failure.

The main idea behind the Martingale System is to double your bet amount for your next bet every time you make a losing bet. The theory is that if you keep doubling your bets, you will eventually pick up all of your losses plus the profit of the original bet. After all, there's no way you can just pick losing numbers forever, right? Wrong!

It is a fundamental fact of statistics that each individual outcome of chance does not affect the outcomes of future bets. This means that just because the roulette wheel hits a black number 1000 times in a row does not mean that it will be black on the 1001st spin. In the same light, it is also possible for you to pick 1000 losing numbers in a row without any guarantee that your 1001st spin will be a winner.

Another reason this strategy is not effective is that each roulette table has a betting limit which puts a cap on the maximum amount of money that you can bet on one spin. Assuming you have unlimited money in your bankroll, you will still not be able to bet more than the table limit once your doubling strategy has reached that high. This would throw a wrench in the whole system and make it tough to recover all of your lost bets because you would not be able to continue to double your bet.

Labouchè re System

Labouchè re SystemThis system qualifies as a progressive betting system just like the Martingale System, except the bets do not increase as quickly. Instead of doubling the bets each time, the idea is to use a series of numbers to help determine their next bet size.

Normally, the player will take the first number and the last number in the series and add them together to come up with the size of the next bet. They will then scratch off the numbers that they used and allow the rest of the list to continue to dictate their bet sizes on future bets.

Much like it's cousin, the Martingale System, the Labouchè re System is destined for eventual failure. The main difference is that long streaks of losses will not break the player as quickly due to the bets being increased at a slower rate.

D'Alembert System

D'AlembertThe D'Alembert System is not a progressive system like our first two examples were. Instead, it qualifies as a pyramid system and it was invented way back in the 1700's.

Like most things from the 1700's, this system doesn't work anymore. In fact, it never worked because it was based on the gambler's fallacy. In a nutshell, this fallacy is when the gambler assumes that a win is more likely to follow a loss, and a loss is more likely to occur after a win. Neither one of these is true because each roulette spin is not affected by previous roulette spins.

The strategy for this betting system involves making bets strictly on the even-money outside squares such as red or black. The betting pattern is simple since all you need to do is add one betting unit to your bet size each time you lose money on a spin, or subtract one betting unit from your bet every time you win money on a spin.

Fibonacci System

FibonacciThe Fibonacci System is based on the famous Fibonacci number sequence that can be found all throughout nature. This sequence begins with the numbers one, one, two, three, and five. Each number in this sequence is the sum of the two numbers before it, and it goes on forever.

To apply this sequence to the roulette wheel, you will start with a one-unit bet. If this first bet loses, you will again bet one unit. If this second bet loses, you bet two units. This can continue all the way through the Fibonacci sequence of numbers until the table maximum bet is reached.

Unfortunately, this system will not result in a profit over the long run. It is simply not possible for a sequence of bets that have a negative expected value to come together and suddenly have a positive expected value.

The Wrap-Up

Roulette is one of the most popular games in the world. The fact that there are a large number of bets that are possible and a ton of betting strategies that can be employed help to keep the game interesting.

We recommend roulette as a fun way to pass the time inside of any casino. While the betting systems that exist will not help you to beat the house, they could minimize the damage on your bankroll.

This game should be used for mainly entertainment purposes, since the house edge will not allow you to make an occupation out of playing roulette.
