Color Match Royals

Color Match Royals Video Poker

Most video poker games ignore card colors and focus on the rank and suit. Color Match Royals is different, though, because it offers bonus payouts for the same colored hands (red or black).

A colored royal flush is the largest bonus payout, offering 2,000 coins on a max bet. A colored flush is the most frequent payout because you can win with two suits of the same color.

These prizes create an interesting dynamic that gives you more chances to win big on every hand. But what's the added cost of the Color Match feature?

Find out as we cover how to play this game, payback, pay tables, where to find Color Match Royals, and strategy.

The Basics of Playing Color Match Royals Video Poker

The process of playing Color Match Royals is similar to most other video poker machines. After all, we're not dealing with multipliers (i.e. Barnyard Poker) or special hand structures (i.e. Big Split Poker).

But Color Match Royals does have nuances from the average video poker machine. You can spot these differences below as we describe the betting and playing process.

Betting Process

This game allows you to play 3, 5, or 10 hands per round. You can either adjust the number of hands manually, or just click Bet All Hands.

The base wager is 1-5 coins per hand. You'll bet between $0.25 and $1.25 per hand on a $0.25 coin denomination machine.

If you want to activate the Color Match Royals feature, you must wager another 5 coins per hand. Let's check out an example:

  • 1You're on a 5-play machine.
  • 2You play all 5 hands.
  • 3You make the 5-coin base bet on every hand.
  • 4You make the 5-coin bonus bet on every hand.
  • 5Your total cost per round is 50 coins (10 coins x 5 hands).

This adds up to $12.50 per round on a quarter denomination machine. And it adds up to $50 per round on a dollar machine.

The average low roller won't pay nearly this much to play a video poker game. Even some high rollers will question betting $12.50 on a 5-play quarter machine.

If you're worried about the cost but interested in the game, we advise looking for a 3-play machine. This lowers the max bet per round to $7.50.

Also keep in mind that the feature makes you win more often, helping offset the cost over the long run.

Color Match Royals Feature

When activated, the Color Match Royals feature offers special payouts for a colored royal flush, straight flush, and flush. Here are the payouts on a max bet:

  • Colored royal flush (red or black) = 2000 coins
  • Colored straight flush = 300 coins
  • Colored flush = 20 coins

These payouts seem strange at first glance because they're lower than a normal royal flush, straight flush, and flush.

But you'll earn these payouts more frequently because they can be formed with colors instead of a specific suit. Here's how IGT's website lists the Color Match Royals' frequency compared to a regular video poker machine:

  • 12x more royal flushes
  • 17x more straight flushes
  • 26x more flushes

Earlier we covered how expensive it is to bet 10 coins per hand on a multi-hand machine. But you can also see that this game offers far more big wins than the average machine, too.

Playing Hands

Here are the steps to playing hands in Color Match Royals:

  • 1You select your number of hands, coin size per hand, and bonus bet (optional).
  • 2Hit Deal to receive your 5-card hand.
  • 3Hold cards you want and discard those you don't want.
  • 4You make all holds/discards with the bottom hand; changes are reflected in all other active hands.
  • 5Click Deal/Draw to replace discards with new cards.
  • 6Your hand will be evaluated for wins and Color Match Royals hands (if applicable).
  • 7Click Deal to start a new hand, or change your bet first.

Onscreen Display

Color Match Royals features a busy screen that's confusing at first. But the screen is easier to understand once you break things down piece by piece.

Here are the most notable parts of the onscreen display:

  • Main pay table - Payouts are listed on the left and right sides of the screen.
  • Color Match Royals display - This box shows whether or not the bonus bet is active.
  • Color Match Royals pay table - The Color Match payouts are listed at the top of the screen.
  • Bet One button - Bets one coin every time you push it.
  • Bet Max button - Automatically places the 5-coin max base bet.
  • Speed - Change how quickly cards are dealt.
  • More Games - Change the current variation you're playing.
  • See Pays/Help - See a different view of the pay table and game rules.

Variations

Color Match Royals allows you to choose the variant you want at the opening game screen. You can also push More Games during play to back out to the game selection screen.

The Color Match Royals machine that we see offers six different variations, which you can see below:

  • Bonus Poker

This game pays bonuses for different 4-of-a-kind hands. These hands include four aces, four 2s to 4s, and four 5s to Ks. Four aces pays the most, at 400 coins on a 5-coin wager.

  • Bonus Deluxe

The Deluxe version pays a 400-coin bonus for any 4 of a kind. Full pay Bonus Deluxe also has 99.64% payback, which is among the highest in video poker.

  • Double Bonus

Double Bonus delivers double the bonus payouts. The highest bonus prize is 2,000 coins for four aces with a 2 to 4 kicker.

  • Double Double Bonus

Double Double Bonus offers multiple special payouts, including 2,000 coins for four aces with a 2 to 4 kicker; 800 for four 2s to 4s with an A to 4 kicker; and 800 for four aces.

  • Triple Double Bonus

This variation offers some of the biggest bonus payouts in all of video poker. Four aces with a 2 to 4 kicker pays 4,000 coins on a 5-coin bet. Four 2s to 4s with an A to 4 kicker also pays well at 2,000 coins.

  • Jacks or Better

This game is characterized by playing for a pair of jacks or better and having a simple pay table.

Pay Back and Pay Tables in Color Match Royals Video Poker

This video poker machine features an interesting pay table, thanks to the Color Match Royals feature. You'll not only see the main pay table listed on the sides, but also the Color Match pay table above.

The extra pay table creates exciting possibilities in the bonus variations.

Triple Double Bonus is the most extreme example of this. It offers the following payouts on a max bet:

  • 4,000 coins for a royal flush
  • 4,000 coins for four aces with a 2 to 4 kicker
  • 2,000 coins for a colored royal flush
  • 2,000 coins for four 2s to 4s with an A to 4 kicker

This is just one example, and you'll find that a few other Color Match Royals variations deliver huge payouts, too.

Another positive aspect of Color Match Royals is that you'll win more often. This is especially the case with the colored flush, which pays for an all red or all black hand.

You can check out the best pay tables for each Color Match Royals variation below. We'll also cover payback and colored hand probabilities in this section.

Color Match Royals Pay Tables

The colored payouts are only active on a 10-coin bet (5 base + 5 bonus). The pay tables below reflect this, because it's impossible to win a colored payout with less than the max wager.

Other than the Color Match Royals prizes, these games are similar to their base games. You'll notice some odd differences, though.

One example is 9/7 Jacks or Better (JoB).

First off, there's no 9/7 JoB game under normal circumstances. Secondly, a two pair only pays 1 coin in this version, instead of 2.

9/7 JoB pays 7 coins for a flush to counteract the lower two pair payout.

You'll notice some discrepancies in other pay tables if you're familiar with standard games. But overall, Color Match Royals versions are mostly like the base games.

  • 7/6 Bonus Poker = 98.14% payback
  • 8/7 Bonus Poker Deluxe = 98.71%
  • 9/7/5 Double Bonus Poker = 98.78%
  • 9/5 Double Double Bonus = 98.13%
  • 9/7 Jacks or Better = 98.91%
  • 9/6 Tripe Double Bonus = 98.19%

Now, let's compare these to the base games (without Color Match Royals):

  • 7/6 Bonus Poker (w/o Color Match) = N/A
  • 8/7 Bonus Poker Deluxe = N/A
  • 9/7/5 Double Bonus Poker = 99.11%
  • 9/5 Double Double Bonus = 97.87%
  • 9/7 Jacks or Better = N/A
  • 9/6 Tripe Double Bonus = 98.15%

7/6 Bonus Poker, 8/7 Bonus Poker Deluxe, and 9/7 JoB have been created specifically for Color Match Royals. Therefore, we don't have regular payback figures to compare them with.

But you can see that 9/5 Double Double Bonus Poker (98.13%) and 9/6 Triple Double Bonus (98.19%) pay better with the Color Match Royals version.

The only game that pays worse is 9/7/5 Double Bonus Poker (98.78%). Going further, you actually gain less value by making the Color Match Royals bet here.

Color Match Royals Return and Probability

When you activate the Color Match Royals feature, the bulk of your return comes through the colored payouts. Let's look at an example using 9/7 JoB:

  • Colored royal flush = 6.0% return
  • Colored straight flush = 5.3%
  • Colored flush = 55.85%
  • All other payouts = 36.85%

When activated, the Color Match prizes make up 67.15% of your total return. This means that you can look forward to a large number of colored payouts when you use this feature.

Below, you can see the chances of each Color Match Royals payout occurring, compared to regular prizes:

  • Colored royal flush = 0.03% probability
  • Colored straight flush = 0.18%
  • Colored flush = 29.92%
  • Other payouts = 23.88%
  • No payout = 45.99%

This is another case where Color Match Royals dominate the regular payouts you receive. You have a 30.13% chance of getting a colored payout, versus 23.88% for a base prize.

Where to Find Color Match Royals Poker - Online, Offline, Free, or Real Money

Color Match Royals is one of the newer video poker machines on casino floors. In fact, it debuted at Las Vegas' Global Gaming Expo (G2E) in October 2016.

This game can currently be found at a handful of Vegas casinos with IGT products. And we expect this video poker machine to spread, because it's getting a lot of push.

We haven't found Color Match Royals at any internet casinos.

But you can play this game online at VideoPoker.com. Note that you have to be a Gold Member to play Color Match Royals and other video poker variations.

Color Match Royals Poker Video Poker Strategy

Color Match Royals has two things working against it with regard to strategy:

  • 1It's not a mainstream video poker variation.
  • 2It's fairly new in comparison to most games.

Due to this, we thought that Color Match Royals would be like most alternative video poker games and not have strategy available.

Luckily, a VideoPoker.com forum user named "alpax" created strategy charts for both 9/5 Double Double Bonus and 9/6 Triple Double Bonus. This person developed their strategy using the following tools:

  • Bob Dancer's Video Poker for Winners software
  • Michael Shackleford's (a.k.a. Wizard of Odds) Video Poker Analysis Guide
  • VideoPoker.com webmaster JB's Video Poker Strategy Calculator

As you'll see, the following strategy charts are much more in depth than what's seen in other video poker games.

The addition of colors creates so many different possibilities that they're hard to keep track of. That said, you must be very diligent with this game.

When reading these strategy charts, keep in mind that you start at the top and scan down to find what hand/cards to keep.

General Strategy Tips for Color Match Royals

We only found strategy charts available for two Color Match Royals games, which leaves you in the dark on the other four variations.

But here are some general strategy tips that you can use for any Color Match Royals game:

  • 1Pay special attention to colored pairs - This feels unnatural because few video poker games value colors. But colored pairs have significant value in Color Match Royals.
  • 2Watch for 3 to 4 colored cards to a royal flush - Get in the habit for checking colors on potential royal flush hands.
  • 3Don't Chase Regular Straights - Colored flushes are so easily attainable in this game. That means straights with no color potential have much less value.
  • 4Don't Toss Everything - This game doesn't have any situations where the optimal play is to dump everything. That's because you can form so many different payouts due to the colored hands.

Conclusion

Color Match Royals is an interesting video poker variation that focuses on colors over suits. As long as you make the max 10-coin bet on each hand, you'll win lots of payouts, thanks to the colored flush.

You also have a much better shot at forming colored royal flushes and straight flushes. As IGT touts, you'll earn 12x the royal flushes and 17x the straight flushes.

This sounds like a dream, right?

Sort of. But you have to get past both the cost and extensive strategy to appreciate Color Match Royals.

Because this game is only available in 3-play, 5-play, and 10-play format, you have to bet 10 coins per hand on multiple hands. This adds up to $7.50 per 3-play round, and $12.50 per 5-play round.

The two strategy charts we discussed are much larger than in a game like Deuces Wild or Jacks or Better. Unless you're really into the matching colors concept, you may get frustrated with the detailed strategy.

Color Match Royals isn't for everybody. But if you'd like to try a really unique game, then we suggest giving this video poker game a chance.
