2014 World Cup: USA Looks to Keep Going
There weren’t any upsets on day two of the 2014 World Cup’s knockout round on Monday afternoon, but soccer fans were still blessed with two solid matchups.
Germany and France entered their respective contests as fairly heavy favorites, but narrowly prevailed with 2-1 and 2-0 wins over Algeria and Nigeria, respectively.
Things get even more heated on Tuesday afternoon, as the USA Men’s National Team tries to move on in the tournament with a win over Belgium. The other game doesn’t carry any less suspense, though, as Argentina and Switzerland go to battle to see who moves on and who goes home.
Let’s break down both World Cup knockout matches to see who might move on in the single elimination round:
Argentina vs. Switzerland
The first game of Tuesday afternoon gets started at 12:00 PM ET, with Argentina and Switzerland duking it out. Argentina is the clear heavy favorite after going 3-0 in their grouping. They showed a solid balance of offense and defense and look to be one of the more complete teams in the World Cup tourney right now.
Switzerland is surely no cakewalk, however, as they topped Ecuador and Honduras, with their only loss being a bit of a shootout against a strong France team. If this game gets out of control, the slight edge might go to the Swiss, but Argentina has proven to be the stronger defensive team and should keep this one in their control. Look for it to be close, but Argentina should be able to find a way to move on.
Pick: Argentina, 2-1
USA vs. Belgium
The United States team isn’t necessarily better than Belgium on paper, but they’re suddenly a hot pick to advance to the next round, if not much further. USA relies on solid coaching, defense, control and grit. They’ve gutted out a tough win over Ghana, ended in a draw with Portugal and narrowly lost to a very good Germany team, 1-0.
Belgium has no losses or draws on it’s 2014 World Cup resume, as they’ve won all three of their games so far, including a 2-1 victory over a solid Algeria team. Their grouping arguably was slightly less difficult, however, which could make these two teams more evenly matched than some may think.
Belgium is probably the safer pick here, but there is something undeniable about the USA team. If there is any magic to be had in this year’s World Cup, the United States Men’s National Team just might expend it today when they get going in their 4:00 PM ET showdown with Belgium.
Pick: USA, 1-1 (win in shootout, 4-3)
