Sometimes, lightning strikes and even the smallest of wagers can turn into huge payouts. That was the case in Florida when a bettor placed a modest horse racing wager of just 50 cents and ended up winning an incredible $524,966.50.
While the majority of sports are shut down at the moment, horse racing is raging on and giving sports betting enthusiasts something to get excited about.
How It Played Out
The winning bet took place at Gulfstream Park, located in Hallandale Beach, FL, where horse races are still taking place.
The unnamed winner hit it big in the Early Pick 5 contest where they were able to pick the winners of the first five races. The win went on to garner a jackpot of more than $500K on a mere 50 cent bet.
Freddy Soto, Union Lane, He’s a Babe, Enzoexpress, and Lashara managed to win the combo for the hit. Freddy Soto truly came out of nowhere and was seen not just as a long shot, but an extremely long shot.
And Freddy Soto wasn’t the only surprise of the day, Union Lane created buzz too by managing to pay out at 34-1 thanks to keeping the favorite, Witch Hunter, out of striking distance.
Not only was it an exciting win for the bettor, but it also managed to set a record of the fifth-highest 50 cent Pick 5 payout not just at the track, but in North American history. That same result also created a record for the third-highest payout for a non-jackpot.
Other Race Details
Track records also go on to show that one lucky bettor managed to hit the Race 1 superfecta – which means they were able to guess the first four horses that won. Of course, that had the long shot Freddy Soto in front.
Additionally, there were nine tickets that hit the Pick 3 horses with odds of 26-1, 36-1, and 70-1 who went on to win the first three races. That 50 cent ticket paid out at an impressive $14,483.65. Again, not bad for a 50 cent wager.
Nowhere Near Last Year’s Record
As exciting as the $500K win was on a 50 cent ticket, it doesn’t come close to the payout that happened last year – also at Gulfstream.
A bettor hit the Rainbow 6, which is betting on the first six races. A wager of just 20 cents was placed and paid out at an absolutely astonishing $2.2 million. And again, that still doesn’t touch the record that was set in 2014. It was then that a bettor also hit the Rainbow six and had a payout of $6.6 million.
Gulfstream Park is a fully functioning racetrack along with a county-approved casino. Not only is it a popular track in Florida, but it is one of the most well-known and popular tracks in the whole country. This past weekend’s big winner is just another interesting record that puts the track back into the spotlight.
