Aussie Millions Main Event Won By Amichai Barer
One of the largest international poker tournaments reached its conclusion this weekend, as the Aussie Millions main event was won by Amichai Barer. The Canadian poker player, who began play yesterday with a healthy chip lead, made it past a final table featuring several top players to be claim the first prize.
Barer is a successful online player, having racked up winnings of nearly six million dollars under his screen name “Uhhmee”, so clearly has the skills to compete at the top level of the game. Whether he expected to best a field of 677 players, including some very well-known names, is another matter though.
Before this weekend his biggest pay out from playing live was around $180,000. That came back in December last year, when he came second in a European Poker Tour (EPT) event in Prague. This almost pales into insignificance when compared to the $1.6 million he won at the Crown Casino in Melbourne yesterday.
Another successful online player, Sorel Mizzi, came second. Despite an impressive display at the final table, Mizzi couldn’t catch up with Barer and when the duo entered the heads up phase of the tournament Barer had a two to one chip advantage. While he is sure to be disappointed that he couldn’t go one better, winning $1 million should have eased the pain somewhat.
The other five players who made the table walked away with the following pay outs.
3. Jake Balsiger – $650,000
4. Darren Rabinowitz – $450,000
5. Vincent Rubianes – $335,000
6. Andrew Phaedonos – $250,000
7. Scott Seiver – $170,000
