This Monday morning Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge and wife of Prince William, went into labor at a London hospital. She is due to give birth to the third in line to the British throne and the imminent birth has caused something of a betting frenzy among the British public. A number of the leading bookmakers in the United Kingdom have reported a huge rush of bets on related markets.
The most popular betting market is on the name of the child. Currently among the betting favorites are Alexandra, Victoria, James and George. Alexendra seems like a good bet if it is a girl; that is the Queen’s middle name and also the name of Prince William’s godmother.
The bookies are taking wagers on a number of other markets too, such as the weight of the baby and whether it will be a prince or princess. You can even bet on what color dress Pippa Middleton (the Duchess’s sister) will be wearing when she pays a visit. More long term wagers are available on the destination of the baby’s first overseas visit, what their first job will be and who the godparents will be.
The British have long been known for holding royalty close to their heart and most of today’s betting activity is bound to be sentimental rather than serious bettors looking for value. The bookmakers will certainly be enjoying it regardless, and many of them are actively publicizing the markets and odds they have on offer.
