No horse has completed the Triple Crown with a perfect sweep in 35 years. The last to do it was affirmed in 1978 with a sweep of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
California Chrome could be the next to accomplish the feat.
The Belmont Stakes kicks off on June 7th and gives horse racing fans another shot at watching glory unfold before their very eyes. While many enjoy the sport for betting purposes, merely to watch the stud horses run or for fierce competition, quite possibly the greatest reason is to see such a rare feat take place and recall being there to see it.
Belmont Stakes Week 2014 has arrived and the scheduling and positions will soon be set on June 4th, which has horse racing fans inching closer to the possibility of California Chrome being etched into history as just the 12th ever winner of the Triple Crown.
Is it any coincidence that California Chrome has a shot at pulling it off and becoming lucky number 13, while exactly 12 horses have come one win shy of defying the odds over the past 35 years? It seems in a sport like horse racing, there are no coincidences, just fantastic happenings.
On June 7th, California Chrome could be part of another happening that could go down in history, entering the race with six straight wins, including first place finishes in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Win number seven in a row would give California Chrome and horse racing fans a Triple Crown winner for the first time in nearly four decades.
While there is always that distinct possibility that California Chrome fails to live up to the hype, the expectations have certainly been set with California Chrome being even odds (1/1). California Chrome is the clear heavy favorite, but horse racing fans probably have the failures of Big Brown 1/5 odds in 2008) and Smarty Jones 1/5 in 2004) fresh in their minds.
In less than one full week, the American horse racing community will either be overjoyed or left wondering what could have been. Whether it happens or not, few will argue that it’s at least a thrill to even get to the point of it being a possibility.
