Champions League Knock Out Rounds Betting Preview – Part 1
The UEFA Champions League resumes this week, with 8 of the 16 teams left in the competition playing the first of their two legged ties. The remaining 8 teams play their first legs next week. The return legs will take place during the two weeks after that. We will be taking a look at the betting in each of these ties over the coming weeks.
This week, the four ties taking place are as follows.
- Bayer Leverkusen v Paris Saint Germain
- Manchester City v Barcelona
- Arsenal v FC Bayern Munchen
- AC Milan v Atletico Madrid.
The first two ties take place tomorrow, Tuesday, and we’ll look at these today. We will go over the other two ties, which take place on Wednesday, tomorrow.
Mega-rich French side Paris Saint Germain, top of their domestic league, are the clear favorites to progress to the next round at the expense of Bayer Leverkusen, and the bookies probably have this one right. Leverkusen are currently second in the table in their domestic League, the German Bundesliga, and are having a decent enough season, but PSG will probably have too much for them.
There is very little value on betting on PSG to progress though, as the odds are at around 1.20. To win the first leg they are 2.20 (Leverkusen are 3.10), which is probably the bet to make.
Manchester City against Barcelona is the stand out tie of this round. English club Manchester City are in the knock out rounds of the Champions League for the first time so this is new territory for them but you wouldn’t rule them out even against the might of Spanish heavyweights Barcelona. Barcelona are the favorites to progress at 1.50, with City at 2.40, but this one is really tough to call.
City are around 2.80 to win to win this week’s tie, with Barcelona at 2.40 and the draw at 3.40. Again this is tough to call but, despite Barcelona being favorites to win the match, there is some value here to be had betting on City here. They have been in irresistible form at home, bar a recent slip up against fellow title contenders Chelsea, and have been scoring for fun. There are question marks over their defensive solidity, but they could well nick a result and at 2.80 this is a bet worth making.
