  • Ciryl Gane and Alexander Volkov are expected to headline the UFC’s June 26 fight card.
  • Gane is 5-0 inside the UFC Octagon and is coming off a win over Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
  • Volkov defeated Alistair Overeem in what turned out to be Reem’s last UFC bout last February.

A heavyweight bout with possible title implications headlines the UFC June 26th event.

Top 5 heavyweights Ciryl Gane and Alexander Volkov will look to strengthen their respective cases for a title shot when they collide in the main event of the said Fight Night event at a still to be determined location. This will mark the second consecutive headliner for Gane and the 5th main event billing for Volkov.

Off to a Perfect Start

Considered one of the top prospects in the heavyweight division, France’s Ciryl Gane is off to a perfect start to his MMA career. The former TKO heavyweight champion and Muay Thai fighter is 8-0 with six stoppage victories in 8 MMA bouts, including 5-0 with 1 knockout and two submission wins inside the Octagon.

In his last bout, Gane outstruck Jairzinho Rozenstruik in a five-round stand-up battle. Although UFC President Dana White didn’t like how he won the fight, Gane used his better striking skills to pull off a unanimous decision to win over the 6th ranked heavyweight in the UFC.

After the fight, no. 2 ranked Derrick Lewis called out Gane and the Frenchman accepted the “dangerous” fight against the Black Beast who is considered one of the best knockout artists in UFC history. But with Lewis possibly challenging Francis Ngannou if the UFC cannot come to financial terms with Jon Jones, the promotion is giving Gane another challenge in the dangerous Alexander Volkov.

A New Contender Has Arrived

Volkov announced his arrival as a heavyweight contender after brutalizing Alistair Overeem in their Feb. 6th headliner. The 32-year old from Moscow has won back-to-back fights against Walt Harris and Overeem, both via knockout to move up to no. 5 in the latest UFC heavyweight rankings.

Drago is a former Bellator Heavyweight tournament winner who also ruled as the M-1 Global heavyweight champion. He relinquished his M-1 belt to join the UFC in 2016 and picked up four straight wins to open his UFC career. That streak earned him a fight against Derrick Lewis at UFC 229, a bout that could have led to a title shot. But after dominating Lewis on the feet for four rounds and the first four minutes of the fifth round, Lewis knocked out Volkov in the closing seconds of the fight, leaving the Russian stunned and Lewis challenging Daniel Cormier for the belt in his next bout.

He is 3-1 since that defeat and this time around, Volkov hopes to upset the 4th ranked Gane and move into title contention. With the possibility that Lewis will get the next heavyweight title shot and Stipe Miocic not likely to get an immediate rematch, Volkov only Curtis Blaydes and Gane on top of him in the rankings, making the UFC heavyweight belt closer to Volkov’s grasp.
