Conor McGregor Involved in Incident at UFC 223 Media Day
UFC 223 is set to go down at Barclays Center in Brooklyn this weekend, but Conor McGregor won’t be participating. Despite the fact that he’s not slated to appear at the event, McGregor and his team made a surprise appearance at media day on Thursday afternoon.
According to MMA reporter Ariel Helwani, McGregor and his team showed up toward the end of media day and started a skirmish with UFC lightweight fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov and his team. The kerfuffle reportedly began when Nurmagomedov was entering a van to leave Barclays Center. The incident was caught on video, and McGregor can be seen throwing a metal barrier and a garbage can toward said van.
Helwani added that someone inside the van was injured when a chair was thrown through a window.
UFC president Dana White was not at the arena at the time of the incident, but he returned upon hearing of the fight. White subsequently told reporters that he believes a warrant had been issued for McGregor’s arrest, but the New York Police Department has said that the matter is still under investigation. The NYPD is still trying to figure out whether a crime was committed, and no warrant has been issued as of yet.
White added that Artem Lobov has been pulled from the UFC 223 fight card as a result of his involvement in the incident. Lobov was reportedly a part of McGregor’s group that stormed Normagomedov’s van.
Another fighter, Michael Chiesa, suffered cuts to his face as a result of the incident, according to White. Chiesa’s coach, Rich Little, said that the fighter sustained lacerations to his forehead and that he was “cut up” by shattered glass.
Little went on to describe the incident, saying,
“Conor went bananas and put a beating on the van that we were in looking for Khabib [Nurmagomedov]. A million security guards had to restrain him. Mike’s cut up now. He’s got marks on him, for sure. I don’t think too seriously. Everything happened so fast. It was just like we got jumped.”

White said that Chiesa was taken to the hospital with his injuries.
McGregor is being stripped of his lightweight title belt because he has not fought in UFC since November of 2016. Featherweight Max Holloway is slated to move up a weight class to take on Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title at UFC 223 on Saturday. Nurmagomedov is a perfect 25-0, while Holloway is 19-3 as a featherweight.
The van that was reportedly assaulted was set to take people back to the hotel.
McGregor and Nurmagomedov have a history dating back to 2016. After Nurmagomedov won a match at UFC 205, he took the microphone in the arena and called McGregor a “chicken.” Some light banter followed back-and-forth since before culminating in the physical altercation at the hotel on Wednesday. Nurmagomedov reportedly got into a shouting match with Lobov, who is McGregor’s close friend.
