C.C. Sabathia and 7 Daily Fantasy Baseball Value Plays For Monday, 8/1

Monday is starting to look more and more like the day to focus on in daily fantasy baseball. That’s the day where DraftKings offers up a cheap, high upside GPP, with just a $4 entry and first place getting a gaudy $50,000.

It’s a fun day to chase, so what better spot to take a look at where you can find value for your DFS roster?

The elite pitchers are few and far between tonight, but you’ll need a value pitcher and some value hitting if you want both Stephen Strasburg and some big bats.

Let’s see who makes for the best bets at DK tonight:

SP: C.C. Sabathia – Yankees ($7.6k)

Let this be your warning: there isn’t a ton of value that makes you feel good at pitching tonight.

You may have to take a dive to get all the right pieces to fit, but this overall feels like a night to find value elsewhere and instead pay up with solid arms.

Sabathia is as good a dive as any, though, as he’s under $8k, was rather strong in his last outing (21 fantasy points) and gets a banged up Mets team on the road. That is good because it’s the Mets, who have been weak offensively, but also because it’s not in Yankee Stadium. Sabathia has wrecked away from his home base this year (well, 17 fantasy points per game, at least), so this could be a sneaky spot to use him.

Again, we don’t “trust” him and the Yanks are not locks to help him get the win with how bad their offense has been, but there is a lot to like here.

C: Willson Contreras – Cubs ($3.6k)

Catcher is a terrible position in general in daily fantasy baseball, but it’s even worse tonight with Jonathan Lucroy unvailable (traded).

That has me looking for value, and what’s better than a reasonably priced Cubs hitter? Contreras has not been amazing lately (one hit in last four games), but he’s fared well against Miami, is at home and gets a very beatable pitcher in Adam Conley.

I’m not gaga here, but you could do much worse and the logic feels right. If you don’t want Contreras, you could take a shot on guys like Evan Gattis or Russell Martin. I might just pay up for Wilson Ramos, who appears to be the only safe option at catcher.

1B: Eric Hosmer – Royals ($3.5k)

The Royals have been atrocious thanks to a slew of injuries, but Hosmer has been one of their few bright spots.

He doesn’t have a huge edge on Chris Archer (who I actually love tonight), but his splits are mildly positive, he’s mashed the Rays in three appearances and he has two jacks in his last three outings.

Hosmer is anything but stable, but he can get you the long ball and is pretty cheap. He’s worth a shot if you’re looking to save at first base tonight.

2B: Ryan Schimpf – Padres ($3.6k)

You’re my boy, blue. Seriously, I really am digging Schimpf, both because his name is awesome and he’s also been super consistent.

He’s been getting walked a ton because he showed his power not too long ago (5 walks in last 4 games), but he’s at least getting on the board (4+ fantasy points in 9 of last 10 games).

That won’t excite you alone – nor should it – but Schimpf has upside with the long ball, is at home and gets the inconsistent Jimmy Nelson. He’s also batting 4th these days and has a nice splits advantage tonight. He’s no lock, but he looks like a fine value that could potentially blow up.

3B: Javier Baez – Cubs ($3.9k)

Third base could be a fun spot to throw some caution to the wind, as guys like Travis Shaw, Wilmer Flores and Kyle Seager are all under $4k and could offer some serious upside based on their price or matchup.

None of them pop off the table like crazy, though, so I may prefer a cheap Cub option here. Baez is obviously embedded in a dreamy offense, gets the beatable Conley and is at home.

In addition, Baez has been pretty good lately, as he’s registered at least one hit in five of his last seven contests. He’s been cold in his past two, but this could be a good spot for him to get back on track. The splits are heavily in favor for him here, as he mashes lefties.

SS: Alexi Amarista – Padres ($2.5k)

Again, if you want to go cheap and stick with a nice stack, you can take the easy route and add Addison Russell ($3.7k) and completer your cheap Cubs squad.

That’s fun and possibly a hit, but I can’t refrain from pointing out Amarista (should he start), as he’s batting early in the order, gets the beatable Jimmy Nelson at home and is insanely cheap.

On top of all of that, Amarista has been good, dropping in 11 and 16 fantasy points in his last two games. In fact, he has six hits in his last three games. The dude is on fire, super cheap and has a winnable matchup. He might not explode, but at this price you don’t need him to do much. Just make sure he starts.

OF: Trea Turner – Nationals ($3.6k)

Archie Bradley isn’t exactly an easy matchup on the road, but as we’ve learned in daily fantasy baseball, matchup often has nothing to do with the end results.

Tonight we’re simply looking for value that offers upside, and I think Turner brings that to the table. Not only is he a good price, he also can be slotted in at 2Band comes in red hot.

Turner has been mashing even without homers lately, producing 10+ fantasy points in 7 of his last 10 contests. I like that fire, plus he’s been leading off. If he’s near the top of the order again tonight, he’s got to be on your radar.
