Last year, news broke that Jon Jones was officially vacating his UFC light-heavyweight title in order to move up in weight. It was a huge move for MMA’s best fighter. Recently, UFC President Dana White hinted that Jones vs. Miocic is a possibility to take place in the future.
Stipe Miocic is considered by many to be the greatest heavyweight champion in history. He lost his title back in March but seems determined to reclaim the title. Now is a great time to talk about what could lead to Jones and Miocic competing this year.
Let’s get into it!
Historically speaking, the UFC’s heavyweight division has been the most difficult for fighters to succeed in. The record for consecutive title defenses is only three. This past March, the heavyweight title changed hands once again after Francis Ngannou scored a second-round knockout over Stipe Miocic.
Many believe that Ngannou will be the next big thing in the weight class. He has won each of his past five bouts in the UFC by knockout. In his title-winning performance against Stipe, Francis also showed a much-improved grappling game, too.
It now appears that the new champion’s first title defense is now set. Dana White is hinting that he will book Francis Ngannou vs. Derrick Lewis sometime in the near future. This would be a rematch from their first bout in July of 2018.
That fight is thought to be one of the worst in UFC history. Both Ngannou and Lewis were extremely hesitant to throw any punches in that bout. In the end, Lewis was declared the winner via a lackluster unanimous decision.
The majority of online sports betting sites are listing Ngannou as the favorite in this rematch. He is likely the hardest hitter in UFC history. Under the tutelage of Eric Nicksick over at Xtreme Couture, he seems like an extremely difficult man to defeat.
Of course, the biggest fight the UFC can make at heavyweight is Jon Jones vs. Francis Ngannou. It now seems that we could see a different fight for Jon first.
Back in 2011, Jon Jones became the youngest champion in UFC history. He then went on one of the most impressive championship runs in history. Jones has set the record for UFC title defenses and many believe he is the greatest fighter in the history of their sport.
Jones has been training to make a move into the heavyweight division for the past year. He appears in great shape and is significantly larger than he was at 205 pounds. If all goes according to plan, his first bout in the heavyweight division will take place in the near future.
Earlier this week, Dana White revealed he was interested in booking Jones vs. Miocic soon. With the next heavyweight title fight already lined up, this would make sense for the division. The winner would almost certainly earn a crack at the winner of Ngannou vs. Lewis.
Jon doesn’t seem interested in this fight, though. He spoke with the media this week and revealed he is only interested in a crack at Ngannou. You can check out his comments below.
“I’m not here to fight Stipe but I will defend my belt against him no problem. I’m looking for the biggest draw and I’m willing to wait. 33 years old in a better athlete right now than I’ve ever been before… I’m just going to keep training my ass off.”
This makes sense. Jon will not want to risk a crack at the heavyweight championship by fighting a dangerous fighter like Stipe Miocic. If the UFC offers him enough money, however, there is always a chance that we could see him change his mind. We’ll be sure to offer updates on this situation over the next few months!
MMA fans around the world seem extremely interested in seeing the heavyweight title up for grabs again. This is far from the only weight class that fans are looking at, though. On Saturday, the lightweight championship will officially be up for grabs!
Micheal Chandler and Charles Oliveira will be competent for the vacant lightweight championship of the world. It’s an incredible clash between two known finishers. Many are heading over to BetOnline to make their wagers on this bout.
Chandler is listed as the +110 underdog in this fight. He looked incredible with his knockout victory over Dan Hooker this past January. Some feel that the former Bellator champion has the perfect skill set to defeat Charles Oliveira this weekend.
Oliveira comes into his first title fight off an eight-bout win streak. He is extremely dangerous everywhere and seems to be in his fighting prime right now. For those reasons, he enters this fight as the -130 favorite.
There is a lot happening across every weight class of the UFC. The heavyweight division is perhaps the most interesting in the sport right now. Hopefully, Jon Jones makes his debut in the organization sometime in the near future.
