Dolphins Lose RB Knowshon Moreno to Torn ACL
Just when the Miami Dolphins thought they were getting running back Knowshon Moreno back, they lose him again. Unfortunately, this time the former Denver Bronco is gone for good.
Down goes Moreno
Per reports, Moreno suffered a torn ACL in his knee on Sunday and will be lost for the remainder of the 2014 NFL season.
Constantly battling injuries throughout his career, Moreno was seen as a major injury risk once he hit the open market as a free agent this past off-season. Miami looked past Moreno’s injury history, however, due to a need at the running back position, as well as Moreno seemingly overcoming his injury label in 2013 and producing as a top NFL rusher.
Moreno raised eyebrows right away in South Beach, as he reportedly shown up to camp out of shape and immediately had a knee issue that required surgery. Moreno was able to beat the odds and prove his critics wrong initially, however, as he returned for Miami’s opener in week one and pummeled the opposition for over 100 rushing yards in an upset win over the New England Patriots.
That’s about where Moreno’s impressive run would end, however, as he sustained a minor injury that cost him several games before finally returning to action in week six.
It’s Miller time
The loss of Moreno is an underrated one, as the Dolphins now have no safety net to fall back on. Moreno was supposed to at best be a replacement option for inconsistent second-year back, and at worst be a solid running mate. Now, the Fins will have no choice but to buy in fully to Miller.
The good news is Miller has actually shined when given the chance this year, somehow being able to total at least 50 yards in each game this year. In fact, Miller could have arguably been even better had Miami not seemingly abandoned the run in two early season losses.
If the Dolphins actually stick with Miller and give him a chance, they can still potentially survive the loss of Miller. For now, Daniel Thomas will slide in as Miller’s top backup and could rotate in as part of a continued committee approach.
