  • Detroit’s Dwane Casey is the +200 betting favorite to be the next NBA head coach to be fired.
  • Lakers head coach Frank Vogel is second at +250 with his Lakers just 9-10 after Tuesday’s games.
  • Rockets head coach Stepehn Silas, Pelicans’ Willie Green, and OKC’s Mark Daigneault complete the Top 5 names in the BetOnline oddsboard.

Luke Walton became the first NBA head coach to be fired this season.

The Kings announced last weekend that they were parting ways with the former Lakers’ player after two-plus seasons. Walton was hired by Sacramento in 2019 to turn their struggling franchise around. However, after two 31 wins seasons and a 6-11 start to the current one, management had enough and decided to move on.

While Sacramento is still trying to decide whether to keep interim head coach Alvin Gentry long-term or hire from the outside, the best NBA sportsbooks are already thinking ahead by opening the betting market for the next NBA head coach to get the pink slip.

Is Dwane Casey Next?

According to the BetOnline App, Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey is likely to be the next bench tactician to get fired this season. Casey has opened as the +200 betting favorite to be ‘that’ guy as the Pistons continue to struggle this season. Casey went to Detroit with impressive credentials after leading the Toronto Raptors to six straight postseason appearances. But after leading Detroit to a 41-41 season and a trip to the first round in 2019, the Pistons have won 20 games each in 2020 and 2021.

Detroit has the 4th worst record in the league this season at 4-13. The team is just 3-7 in their last 10 games as of Tuesday’s games and has dropped three in a row. The Pistons are among the teams with the longest odds to win the 2022 NBA championship at +75000 via BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook. Detroit is also a heavy -10000 favorite NOT to make the playoffs for the third straight season under Casey.

Casey extended his contract with the Pistons during the offseason and it is supposed to be valid until the 2023-24 campaign. But given the team’s continued struggles, and the fact that he was not hired by current top executive Troy Weaver, Casey’s seat in Detroit may be hotter than anyone else’s right now. Well, except perhaps the next guy on the list.

Lakers are 9-10

Listed as the +250 second-favorite to be the next head coach to be fired is Los Angeles Lakers bench tactician Frank Vogel. Rockets head coach Stephen Silas is third on the list at +550 but given his cards, his seat may not be in trouble yet. So is Willie Green’s at New Orleans despite a 3-16 start and +600 odds. OKC’s Mark Daigneault completes the Top 5 at +1000 but like the Rockets, not much is expected of the Thunder this season so he will likely get a pass. This leads us back to Vogel.

Vogel led the Lakers to the 2020 NBA title during the bubble tournament in Orlando. Last season, however, the Lakers had to go through the play-in tournament just to make the playoffs where they were ousted by the Phoenix Suns in the first round. The Lakers regrouped with major moves this season but surprisingly, they are just 9-10 after losing to the New York Knicks on Tuesday.

The Lakers opened with the second-best odds to win the NBA title this season at +450 via BetMGM. But the Purple and Gold have dropped to fourth in the latest championship betting board at the said online sportsbook at +900 with the Golden State Warriors at +650 and the Milwaukee Bucks at +700. Los Angeles ranks 25th in the league in offensive rating, 20th in defensive rating, 24th in net rating, 28th in points allowed, 29th in turnovers, and 20th in three-pointers made per game. With perhaps the biggest expectation among all teams in the league, Vogel’s job is the most volatile right now.
