Early Estimates Show that UFC 229 Smashes Previous PPV Record
Typically after a big boxing or MMA event, it doesn’t take long before media outlets circulate rumors and reports about how many PPV buys a particular event sold. For UFC 229, it took less than a week before the PPV estimates made the rounds. In the week leading up to the huge event, Dana White was predicting that they would eclipse 2.5 million PPV buys and possibly even reach the 3 million mark. According to an early report, Dana White might have been right on the money.
MMAFighting.com has reported that early UFC 229 returns show that the event produced 2.4 million PPV buys. It’s believed that over 1.9 million PPV buys were generated from traditional PPV purchases and another half million purchases were made through UFC’s streaming services.
These numbers easily put UFC 229 at the top of the all-time PPV buys list for not only the UFC, but the sport of MMA as a whole. Prior to this event, the all-time MMA PPV mark was 1.65 million PPV buys for UFC 202: McGregor vs Diaz 2. The following is a list of the Top 10 UFC PPVs of all-time, with UFC 229’s unofficial numbers, according to Tapology:
|UFC||UFC Main Event||UFC PPV Buys|
|UFC 229||McGregor vs Nurmagomedov||2,400,000|
|UFC 202||Diaz vs. McGregor 2||1,600,000|
|UFC 196||McGregor vs. Diaz||1,317,000|
|UFC 205||Alvarez vs. McGregor||1,300,000|
|UFC 100||GSP, Brock Lesnar and others.||1,300,000|
|UFC 194||Aldo vs. McGregor||1,200,000|
|UFC 116||Lesnar vs Carwin||1,160,000|
|UFC 207||Nunes vs. Rousey||1,100,000|
|UFC 193||Rousey vs. Holm||1,100,000|
|UFC 114||Jackson vs Evans||1,050,000|
In total, UFC 229 marks the 16th time a UFC PPV has cracked the 1 million PPV buys mark. But, it’s the only UFC event to have ever surpassed the 2 million PPV mark. There’s a slight chance that it could even surpass the 2.5 million PPV mark once the UFC releases its official numbers in a few months.
I’ve already detailed how McGregor is the PPV king of MMA, but it’s become even more staggering to see the vast difference between his PPVs and other fighters. McGregor now owns the top 4 all-time PPVs in MMA history. Let’s also not forget that when Conor fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September 2017, they sold 4.3 million PPVs.
When comparing UFC 229’s PPV numbers to UFC 228, it completely destroys the preceding event. UFC 228 reportedly sold 130,000 PPVs and it was headlined by Tyron Woodley vs Darren Till. It’s also believed that UFC 229 will sell more PPVs (2.4 million) than all of the other UFC PPVs in 2018 combined (2.25 million).
McGregor vs Nurmagomedov Rematch Will Break Records
The UFC can celebrate this landmark occasion, but they won’t have to wait long before the record is broken again. It’s almost a guarantee that a rematch between Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov will smash this mark and flirt with 3 million PPV buys. Fans from around the world will tune in to see if McGregor can get revenge or if any other craziness will happen.
Despite Nurmagomedov’s post-fight brawl being one of the most reprehensible things ever done in the sport of MMA, it will also be the one thing that generates the most intrigue for a rematch. And, that my friends, is why the UFC brass and Dana White are secretly celebrating what happened. They know it will make them a lot of money in a rematch.
