FanDuel Online Sportsbook Launches in Pennsylvania

On Monday, FanDuel’s online sportsbook officially launched in the state of Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board watched over a brief three-day test period for the site before officially approving its launch earlier this week.

FanDuel previously partnered with Valley Forge Casino Resort in order to bring online sports betting to Pennsylvania. The Valley Forge Casino is located in Montgomery County.

The daily fantasy sports provider launched a sports betting operation in the middle of last year, shortly after the United States Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). FanDuel became the first online sportsbook to operate in the state of New Jersey, and it has gone on to become the state’s leader in the industry by a huge margin.

FanDuel Sportsbook has mobile compatibility, and the company believes it will enjoy success in Pennsylvania similarly to how it has dominated the market in New Jersey. A statement released by FanDuel on Monday says the company has plans to launch an omni-channel marketing campaign that includes influencer marketing, sports talk radio partnerships, social media promotions, and a new television advertisement.

FanDuel has been excited to get into the Pennsylvania market considering how successful it has been in New Jersey. Because Pennsylvania is more populous than New Jersey, it’s no surprise that the company has big aspirations moving forward.

Fourth Online Sportsbook in PA

FanDuel officially open its doors in Pennsylvania as its fourth online sportsbook. The SugarHouse Casino was the first to offer online sports betting two months ago. However, FanDuel will bring a number of customers already familiar with the site’s daily fantasy sports operation that has been active for years. In addition to SugarHouse, BetRivers, and Parx also operate online sportsbooks in PA.

Mike Raffensperger, the chief marketing officer for FanDuel Group, issued a statement that said, “We’re leveraging our expertise in creating world-class fantasy and sports betting experiences to build the best online sports betting platform in the state of Pennsylvania. We became the number one sports betting operator in New Jersey by focusing on the customer experience and we can’t wait for sports fans in Pennsylvania to join the party.”

iOS Compatibility

The availability of the FanDuel Sportsbook app on Apple mobile platforms for iPhones and iPads will set it apart from local competition as well. Mobile compatibility has been a problem for some of the other sportsbook operators thus far. For now, FanDuel will be the only sportsbook in the state with iOS compatibility.

Earlier in the year, Apple announced changes with regards to its App Store guidelines for gambling apps. The new language said that games “distributed in apps may not provide access to real money gaming, lotteries, or charitable donations.” As a result, gambling operators are only able to provide their mobile products through native iOS apps.

Massive Revenues

FanDuel accounts for more than 40% of all sports betting revenue in the state of New Jersey, thanks in large part to the physical sportsbook located at the Meadowlands Racetrack. In fact, the $4.4 million in reported revenue from June marked FanDuel’s most profitable month to date. The sportsbook in New Jersey opened in June of 2018, while mobile compatibility in the state began in July of last year.

Gaming operators reportedly took in a record $3.3 billion in 2018, which was a gain of about $60 million over the previous year, according to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. Sports betting, which officially launched in the state last November, accounted for $21.7 million of that. Fantasy sports contests raked in just under $24 million.

For comparison, Pennsylvania’s government took in $1.39 billion in tax revenue in 2018.
