It’s been quite a while since the Trump Taj Mahal was one of the dominant casino properties in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It never quite lived up to Donald Trump’s bold “eighth wonder of the world” claim, but the casino resort thrived for quite a while after opening in 1990. However, it was hurt in a big way by the recession in the middle of the last decade, and it was forced to close permanently in the fall of 2016 despite several attempts at revitalization. It was one of several casino properties in the region to close its doors.
Real estate developer Carl Icahn announced his intentions to sell the property, and it was quickly snapped up by Hard Rock International for the price of just $50 million. Hard Rock promised to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in a rebranding and refurbishment.
Earlier this week, Hard Rock officially revealed a brand new billboard revealing that the property will operate under the name Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The newly renovated casino and resort is set to officially open to the public sometime in the summer of 2018.
Hard Rock Project Features
To this point, Hard Rock has been quiet regarding the new resort’s features. What we do know is that Hard Rock will have done away with all of the Trump Taj Mahal’s turrets, minarets, elephant statues, and so on. It’s safe to assume that the new Hard Rock resort will take a more low-key approach to things, contrary to the lavish nature of its predecessor.
The Hard Rock project is expected to create more than a thousand temporary jobs, which should boost the economy in and around Atlantic City. Upon the completion of construction, the new resort will add more than 3,000 permanent jobs.
Hard Rock property president Matt Harkness said (via Philly.com), “We’re going to have the fun, relaxed vibe that we specialize in at all of our properties, but what you will see here will be like nothing else anyone has seen along the East Coast.” Hard Rock is known for its heavy usage of rock n’ roll memorabilia and other things relating to the industry of music. Harkness added that this specific resort will pay homage to New Jersey’s, specifically Atlantic City’s, musical heritage.
Hard Rock announced that it will spend about $325 million in order to refurbish what was formerly known as the Trump Taj Mahal. The new resort will also include two separate arenas that will seat a total of 7,000 people. 2,400 slot machines will also be included.
There is currently a cafe, operated by Hard Rock, open at the resort site. As a part of the renovation, the cafe will be moved into a larger area where it will be able to seat around 400 customers.
No official opening date has been set as of yet.
