Indiana’s First Native American Casino – Opening Today!

Today, Indiana joins the other 28 states in the U.S. that host Native American casinos.

The Four Winds South Bend in northern Indiana is owned by the Potawatomi nation, who also own three casinos just a few miles north over the Michigan border. The casino has just opened to the public at 4 p.m. this evening.

Casino Specs

The Four Winds South Bend spans about 175,000 square feet. It features a 55,000 square foot gaming floor that hosts 1,800 machine. It does not have any table games, unlike their existing and operational casinos in Michigan which host table games such as blackjack, roulette, and poker with live dealers.

It boasts that the games hosted at the Four Winds have some of the area’s largest jackpots, some of them offering a starting jackpot of $1 million.

Indiana and the Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi nation have agreed the casino will host Class II devices. This class is primarily electronic games, such as slot machines.

Good Eats

Of course, the Four Winds South Bend hosts more than just games.

There are 5 restaurants on the property, including a buffet.

The Copper Rock Steakhouse features USDA Prime dry aged steal, cold water lobster, gourmet desserts, and even has over 450 wines to choose from available both by the bottle and the glass.

Visit the Kankakee Grille for a more laid-back, rustic environment. They offer wood-fired pizza, craft beers, and a 37-seat bar. During the summer, you may want to sit on the outdoor patio and take in the beautiful sights.

The Buffet is all-you-can-eat, so after a day of winning big, you can enjoy food from around the globe. They offer a carvery, where you can try their roasted turkey and ham, made-to-order omelets on the weekends, and a dessert station. On Thursdays, you can indulge in their seafood buffet from 5 – 9 p.m.

For a quick bite, you can stop at Timbers. Jumbo hot dogs, deluxe burgers, flatbread pizzas, chicken wings, freshly made sandwiches, and more are on the menu. You can get your fill of your favorites, and then go back to winning more on your favorite machines.

And, for a pick me up, there’s the White Birch Market. Featuring fresh, flavorful coffee selections, gourmet sandwiches, pastries, desserts, and salads. Step away from the lights and sounds for a moment and return to the floor refreshed.

And when you’re done eating, drinking and playing, visit The Four Winds Outfitters , a hotspot for picking up gifts and mementos for you to remember your trip, and for your friends and family.

The First of its Kind

Indiana has 13 existing casinos, but because they are not Native-owned they do pay state taxes. This gives the Four Winds a leg up from a business standpoint before it even opens to the public, as they will not be paying those same taxes.

It will be interesting in the coming year to see the comparison of the newest addition to Indiana’s gambling scene versus the casinos that have been established and patronized with a long-standing reputation.

Competition aside, this casino opening does mark new territory for Indiana gamblers and the gambling scene. No longer will the residents of Northern Indiana have to drive over the state line to Michigan to play at a Native-owned casino.
