Johnny Manziel Era Arriving in Cleveland?
The Cleveland Browns finally buckled in week 13, as they benched starting quarterback Brian Hoyer and let rookie passer Johnny Manziel finish the final quarter of a loss to the Buffalo Bills.
It was the first benching for Hoyer after winning the job during the preseason, and it’s worth wondering if it will stick. If so, the Johnny Football era could start now for the Cleveland Browns.
Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine refused to fully back Hoyer as his starter for next week’s showdown with the Indianaplis Colts, and said that he would make a decision at quarterback upon further review of game tape.
Hoyer contests that the the Browns are still “his team” and that the job remains his, while the current Browns starting quartebrack expressed shock over being benched in the fourth quarter.
It was arguably a decision much in the making, as Hoyer generated just three points against a tough Bills front line and tossed two interceptions on the day. Hoyer had slowly been digging himself a hole prior to the loss against the Bills, as well, as he has thrown eight interceptions in his last five contests.
Manziel did not lead the Browns back on a heroic combeback, but he did show he could be ready to take over under center with a nice 80-yard scoring drive on his first drive of his career.
Manziel capped his first meaningful NFL action with a 10-yard touchdown and also completed five of eight passes for 63 yards in just one quarter of action.
There are sure to be bumps along the way if Cleveland moves forward with their rookie quarterback guiding the offense, but they had arguably gone as far as the mediocre Hoyer could take them.
With Manziel potentially in the saddle, the Browns offense could blow up with superstar wide receiver Josh Gordon and talented tight end Jordan Cameron (if healthy) in tow.
