MLB Betting: 4 Upsets to Chase on Friday Night
Every week we pause to look at which MLB slates might offer the best upset possibilities. Sometimes there is an upset we like but the odds just aren’t there, or maybe we don’t like the upset chance but love the odds we can play with.
Friday brings some of both, as there is a massive 14-game slate entering later tonight and you have precious little time to finalize your baseball bets. The big issue, of course, will be deciding which upset picks you roll with – if any at all.
If you plan on chasing some baseball upsets tonight, make sure they’re among our favorite four:
Yankees Over Red Sox
We get why New York (+142) is the underdog here, but there is upside with this divisional clash. Both the Yanks and Sox (-157) are battling for the top of the AL East (or a playoff spot). The younger Yanks aren’t as experienced, but they do have lively bats and it’s quite possible they swing hard at a hitter’s park like Fenway.

Oh, they’re also facing the volatile Clay Buchholz, who can crumble at a moment’s notice. Betting on the Yankees doesn’t offer insane upside at betting sites like Bovada, but you could gamble on worse games tonight.
Tigers Over Indians
Detroit (+160) is the mild underdog when they enter Cleveland (-175) to take on ace Corey Kluber. Kluber is never an easy arm to face, but the Tigers have stud rookie Michael Fulmer on the other side and definitely have the bats to give Kluber problems.
This game (and series) is beyond huge for the Tigers, who sit six games back in the AL Central and need to start winning games they arguably shouldn’t if they want to break into the MLB playoff picture. Cleveland is elite at home (another reason why they’re the favorite), but they’re just 5-5 over their last 10 games. It’s not crazy to imagine Kluber having a bad outing and Detroit getting a huge three-game series started off right.
Athletics Over Rangers
Texas (-190) has a clear matchup advantage tonight at their home base, as they’re 47-22 at home and have elite arm Cole Hamels toeing the rubber. That all sounds bad for the Athletics, who wield some power with their bats but aren’t consistent at all offensively.
Oakland (+170) sports interesting odds, however, and they’ve been known for offensive outburst in the second half of the year. We especially could see that in a recent game where they hung games of 16 and 14 runs against a good Royals team.

In fact, they used that offensive series to spark a nice four-game winning streak. That streak could hit five tonight when they bring their hot bats into a hitter’s park.
Braves Over Nationals
If there is a team that gets Max Scherzer’s goat, it has to be the division rival Braves, who seem to give him their best stuff every time out. Atlanta enters tonight as a big underdog (+205) but their offense routinely slaps Scherzer around enough to at least keep the game in doubt.
John Gant also takes the mound for the Braves and was solid last time out. Washington (-235) is certainly not the team you want to see him against, but the fact that this game is in ATL may bode well for him and the Braves. Scherzer’s play has dipped a bit on the road in 2016, so targeting him and the Nats with a familiar foe up against them could make some sense.
