New York May Allow Gambling Inside MSG
New York has been dramatically revamping their laws surrounding gambling. The state needs money, and the gambling industry is a profitable one. Now, lawmakers here are discussing whether or not to allow gambling inside MSG.
Madison Square Garden is one of the most iconic sports arenas in the world. If gambling options were allowed here, it would be a historic moment for the state. Let’s take a look at why this is being discussed, and what to expect for sports betting here in the future.
New York Investing into the Sports Betting Industry
New York famously began allowing Vegas-style casinos to operate back in 2013. Hope was high that these gambling establishments would bring in some much-needed money for the state. Due to high competition, these casinos were failing to hit their revenue projections.
New York legalized sports betting inside the state in January of this year. Governor Cuomo argued that legalized sports betting would help to boost these casinos and increase the revenue they earn. It seemed completely logical, especially with nearby states like New Jersey earning millions every year through their legalized sports gambling market.
Under the new laws, sports betting is legal inside New York casinos. The state will rely on gamblers to make the trip to these casinos in order to make their sports wagers. Or will they? A new bill has been introduced to the State Senate that would extend the scope of legalized sports gambling in the state.
New Gambling Bill Introduced in New York
State Assemblyman Gary Pretlow introduced the bill this week. It will allow for digital sports betting to take place inside racetracks and other commercial facilities. This bill could even allow gambling inside MSG to become legal.
Pretlow recently commented on the chances of this new bill being passed. He told the media,
“Maybe [Cuomo] won’t veto it. Maybe we can override his veto. A lot of things can happen. But if we don’t try something, it’s never going to happen.”
Pretlow is arguing that the more sports betting opportunities available, the greater the revenue earnings will be.
This new bill will permit gambling to take place across a number of different New York establishments. It calls for kiosk-type gambling machines to be available in sports arenas. Countries like the UK allow these machines, with varying degrees of success.
Gambling Inside MSG – Could It Happen?
Anthony Cuomo took a big step by allowing sports betting inside casinos. A complete allowance of sports betting throughout the state seems unlikely. Cuomo argues that additional legislation would require a constitutional amendment.
Cuomo isn’t likely to change his stance anytime soon. The state of New York has massively liberalized its gambling laws. The allowance of gambling inside major sporting arenas is likely a step too far.
That doesn’t mean it’s completely out of the question. If Gary Pretlow can make a good enough argument, and the bill takes measures to prevent problem gambling, anything can happen. At this point, the likelihood of this bill passing in the Senate seems unlikely.
