One of New Zealand’s most popular casinos is set to introduce an online website before the end of 2019. It’s a huge move for a country with strict laws on all forms of iGaming. The SkyCity online casino is coming soon, and gambling fans around the country are excited.
There are still a number of steps that need to be taken before this internet casino site can begin operating. We’re going to be explaining the legality for this site to operate and discuss what the future of online gambling in New Zealand looks like.
Gambling has been a part of New Zealand’s culture for hundreds of years. In 2003, the government here passed a Gambling Act that deemed all forms of gambling illegal, unless directly authorized by the government. Gambling establishments inside the country need to obtain a license and pay tax to the government in order to legally operate.
The Gambling Act of 2003 applies to online gambling, as well. Unfortunately, lawmakers in New Zealand have not passed any legislation to allow New Zealand-based companies to offer internet gambling options. Any gaming sites caught operating inside the country will face heavy fines, at the very least.
That doesn’t mean gambling options in this country are limited to land-based establishments. New Zealanders can legally gamble online through sites based outside the country. Today, many of the best online gambling sites in Europe are available here. News is being reported that a SkyCity online casino will be introduced later this year.
It makes sense that this casino wants to enter into the online market. More people around the world are choosing to gamble online, both on casino games and sports betting than ever before. Before this site can actually begin operating, a number of steps must be taken.
This Auckland-based casino opened its doors all the way back in 1996. More than 20 years later, it is now ready to enter into the online marketplace. As we mentioned earlier, however, this site cannot legally base itself within New Zealand.
Most reports claim that the SkyCity online casino will be based in Europe, alongside many of the most popular online gambling sites in the world. The company has stated it will not advertise to New Zealanders, yet it’s likely to be accessed here by Kiwis interested in what’s being offered. As we mentioned earlier, New Zealanders are able to gamble through sites based in other countries.
This casino site will only offer casino games. Sports betting is massively popular throughout most of New Zealand, yet this casino has limited experience in this market. The exact number of casino games and betting limits have not yet been established.
Not everyone is happy with SkyCity right now. Internal Affairs Minister, Tracy Martin, has made her disapproval known. She states that the government has no authority to stop something like this, and it “highlights how inadequate these laws are – it’s not just for them, but also the huge number of offshore gambling games that are coming into New Zealand now … that we have no way to control.”
The fact that online gambling companies cannot legally operate in New Zealand may present some tax issues with SkyCity’s online casino site. Company officials claim that the website could pay up to $40 million in taxes to the government every year. It’s unlikely that the government can accept this cash.
Even if the company cannot pay New Zealand taxes, SkyCity claims it will contribute money to the government in one way or another. Cash donations to charitable organizations is an option.
Tracy Martin may soon present new legislation to better regulate the online gambling industry. The fact that New Zealand companies are earning millions without the ability to pay taxes to the government is a major issue. It’s clear she’s fed up with foreign sites operating inside the country.
The SkyCity online casino will launch by the end of the year. It will be fascinating to see how popular this site grows in Europe and New Zealand.
