North Carolina’s New Sports Betting Bill Gets Approved

By in Industry on

Many states around the US are actively working to legalize and regulate sports betting. For months, lawmakers in North Carolina have been pushing to open this industry. This week, North Carolina’s new sports betting bill was officially approved.

It’s exciting news for sports fans in this state. Hope is that sports gambling will become legal in North Carolina within the next few months. Let’s take a look at what this bill means for the state moving forward.

Recent Push to Legalize Sports Betting in North Carolina

The US Supreme Court struck down PASPA in May of 2018. Now, every state in the country has the ability to set laws on the sports betting industry. Many states, including New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania have now chosen to regulate sports gambling.

Most of these states are profiting massively as a result of sports betting regulation. Millions of Americans place sports bets every single day. Many of these players make their wagers through US online sports betting sites that are unregulated. States are unable to collect revenue from these websites.

North Carolina has some of the most restrictive gambling laws in the country, yet several politicians here want this to change. Last month, lawmakers introduced a new bill to conduct a study into sports betting expansion.

North Carolina’s sports betting push continues. Lawmakers here will now look closer at how sports betting will impact the state.

North Carolina’s Sports Betting Bill Moves Forward

This is an extremely exciting time for sports gambling fans in North Carolina. With the passing of the sports betting bill, the state government can begin to look closely at how sports gambling will benefit the state. It’s likely that they will look to states such as New Jersey for guidance.

Sports betting will become available in the state’s land-based casinos. There are only two Native American-run casinos in North Carolina. It’s unclear whether or not the state government will approve online sports betting as well.

Most of the states with regulated sports betting markets allow online wagering. New Jersey, for example, uses geo-targeting technology to allow sports betting from anywhere within the state borders. The state’s land-based casinos control these internet sports betting platforms.

Before sports betting can become legal in North Carolina, the state needs to set up a new gambling regulatory body. This group will be responsible for monitoring the gambling industry and collecting sports betting revenue.

Sports Betting Could Be Legal in North Carolina in 2020

Lawmakers in this state are taking their time with the sports betting industry. The fact that North Carolina’s new sports betting bill is passed shows that things are progressing. It seems very likely that regulated sports gambling will come to this state by 2020.

The state’s lottery commission will now need to hire a third-party group to study the impact of this industry. All findings must be submitted to the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee by April of 2015. This study will offer recommendations on how to avoid gambling addiction.

State Representative Harry Warren is pleased to see things moving forward.

Now we’ve got people talking about it rather than just the three or four bill sponsors,” Warren said. “The idea is being accepted, looked at, studied. We knocked it up to phase three, I’d say. I’m not disappointed at all. When the study comes back, we’ll work on the recommendations. In the meantime, I’ll look for another windmill to kick.
