Online Sports Betting in India Could Bring Government Millions

India has some very unusual laws on the online gambling industry. The government here has made it clear that individual states have the ability to set their own laws toward online gambling. New reports indicate that online sports betting in India could bring the government millions of dollars annually.

The issue of online gambling has recently come up in the Delhi High Court. It’s clear that lawmakers in the country are taking a closer look at the industry. Let’s take a look at why India has such a lucrative online sports gambling market.

Should Online Sports Betting in India Be Legal?

Gambling has taken place in India for decades. Strangely, this country still uses the same laws to regulate the gambling industry that were set in the late 1800s. The Information Technology Act of 2000 is considered by some to be the main legislation to regulate online gambling.

Not long ago, lawmakers here began questioning the legality of daily fantasy sports. India’s central government made it clear that each state can set its own laws on this new form of wagering. The government also wants these states to set laws on traditional land-based and online sports betting in India.

Today, most states within the country have banned all forms of online gambling. Despite this, millions of people choose to make their wagers over the internet through the many different online gambling sites in Europe that operate here. Many are now calling for India to fully legalize the online sports betting industry.

In 2018, the Law Commission of India began pushing for sports-related betting to become legal. Many groups are now agreeing with this proposal. Shashi Tharoor, who recently introduced a new sports betting bill in Parliament, recently commented on how the regulation of this industry would benefit the country.

“The long-term prognosis for sports and betting is bleak if corruption is not dealt with. While self-regulatory practices need to be followed by the industry, there is an urgent need to have a statutory framework with government oversight to ensure service providers are following license conditions to track suspicious betting patterns and to have some control over the money flow to curb the generation of black money,” he said.

Online Gambling in India Growing to Become a Billion-Dollar Market

India is home to more than 1.3 billion people. A huge number of individuals here choose to gamble online, despite state laws against it. In 2018, Forbes reported that online gambling in India was growing to become a billion-dollar market.

Numerous estimates claim the online gambling market here will be worth $1.1 billion by 2020. More than 600 million people are expected to gamble online here over the next several years. Mobile gaming is a major reason for the increase in gambling.

Nearly half of India’s population has a smartphone. Many of the online gambling sites operating in this country specifically offer mobile games to target these players. Cheap data plans and mobile phone prices are helping to grow this industry tremendously.

Online sports betting in India is clearly the most popular form of gambling. Esports gambling has grown in this country as well. Unfortunately, certain lawmakers are now considering making all forms of online gambling illegal.

Delhi High Court Considers Banning Online Gambling

In May, several anti-gambling groups in India filed a PIL to ban the online gaming industry. These groups claim that online gambling is already banned in most states. The PIL also argues that internet gambling is damaging to society.

Gambling addiction is a major concern here. Many countries in Europe are dealing with problem gambling issues, including the UK, which has ramped up regulations on the online gambling industry this year.

The All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) disagrees. This pro-gambling group believes that many forms of online gambling fall under the “games of skill” category. They also believe that online sports betting in India would bring in major revenue earnings for the country each year.

In November, Delhi’s High Court will make an official decision to ban or allow online gambling. This decision will have a serious impact on the future of this country’s internet gaming laws.
