Pacquiao vs Mayweather 2: Floyd Announces a Rematch for 2018

On Saturday, the boxing world woke up to a major announcement from the sport’s ultimate moneymaker Floyd Mayweather Jr. The undefeated boxer posted on his Instagram account that he will come out of retirement to fight Manny Pacquiao for a second time. Floyd declared the following: “I’m coming back to fight Manny Pacquiao this year another 9 figure pay day on the way.”

As of this writing, the IG post was seen by over 2.6 million followers and it has been covered by a majority of major media outlets. Floyd’s IG post also included a video where Pacquiao and Mayweather interacted with each other at a Tokyo music festival.

This video is not the greatest of quality as it’s hard to hear what the two boxing greats are saying. Pacquiao states that he has the belt to which Mayweather made the following comments, according to ESPN:

I’m going to take it from you like I did before.” Mayweather would go on to say, “We gonna take the belt. We gonna get the payday. And I don’t want no shoulder excuses.”

The rumor is that Mayweather wants this fight to happen in December. One would imagine that Floyd is targeting Las Vegas as the backdrop for this rematch. Since their first bout, Mayweather has only fought twice as he’s taken on Andre Berto in 2015 and then he fought Conor McGregor in 2017.

Pacquiao’s last fight came in July, where he dominated Lucas Matthysse in a welterweight bout for one of the smaller titles. In a sport where titles mean nothing these days, the hype and excitement is clearly on these two fighters going at it one more time and not any belt.

Pacquiao vs Mayweather I (2015)

For at least a good 5 years, these two fighters lobbied and argued over a potential in-ring showdown. It was a soap opera that captured the sport until they finally touched gloves in the middle of the ring on May 2, 2015, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

The bout was dubbed “The Fight of the Century,” but it ended up being the “overhype of the century.” It was a rather boring fight for two fighters that were hailed as the best this sport had to offer in decades. Two fighters that are guaranteed Hall of Famers, put on a match that lacked any real fireworks. Ultimately, Mayweather’s defensive skills and Pacquiao’s lack of effective offense led to an uneventful bout where Floyd won via unanimous decision (116-112, 116-112, 118-110).

As someone who waited more than 5 years to watch this bout, and covered boxing that entire time, I could only surmise that these two fighters failed to deliver on their promises. Many critics felt the same as the bout was a letdown. With that said, the bout did deliver in viewership as it smashed records with 4.6 million PPV buys. It also smashed revenue records with over $410 million in revenue.

The “fight of the century” might have failed in the ring, but it proved that its moniker held true in PPV buys, gate and overall revenue.

One other bit of news to come from this fight was that Pacquiao had an injured shoulder in this fight, which required surgery after the bout. Floyd referenced that injury in his recent comments on IG when he said “And I don’t want no shoulder excuses.”

Opening Betting Odds for Pacquiao vs Mayweather 2

With the news of this potential fight, the Las Vegas Superbook at Westgate released their opening odds with Mayweather the heavy favorite at -220 and Pacquiao the big underdog at +180. Online sports betting sites like BetOnline, have Mayweather an even bigger favorite at -250 and Pacquiao at +210.

Keep in mind, these odds are based on speculations right now. Additionally, if these two fighters can put together a bout in December, the betting odds will see some significant changes before then.

If you believe Pacquiao would win this rematch then right now is a great time to put money on him as his odds are very appealing. If you believe Mayweather Jr. will win this fight then it might be best to wait and see if his large odds come down some.

Final Words on This Alleged Rematch

I would like to caution all of you who are doing cartwheels over this fight. Let me remind you that these two fighters took over 5 years to make the first fight happen. In 2015 and 2016, there were numerous rumors and reports that these two were going to have a rematch. Ultimately, that didn’t happen. Fast forward to September 2018, and Floyd is declaring that there will be a rematch.

Well, until I see a signed contract and fight date, I’m going to take a “wait and see” approach. I suggest you fight fans do the same. The only hope that this fight will happen, is in Mayweather’s love for money. And, like he stated in his IG comments, he’s looking forward to another 9-figure payday.
