Resorts Becomes First New Jersey Casino to Offer Daily Fantasy Sports
Resorts Casino Hotel announced Monday that it has launched FastPick, which is a daily fantasy sports game that allows players to choose head-to-head player matchups involving real-world athletes. Players are pitted in a one-on-one contest against the casino, which has players assigned to its teams automatically. If the player’s team winds up scoring more points, they win.
First DFS Game Outside Nevada
With this launch, Resorts became the first casino in Atlantic City that allows customers to play fantasy sports contests for money. Resorts President Mark Giannantonio said, “I’m very excited about this new business. We expect it to be exciting for our online customers, and soon, for those who play at our casino. The idea has always been for the brick-and-mortar casino to be integrated as much as possible with our online business.”
This is also the first time daily fantasy sports have broached the casino market outside of Nevada. The spokesman for the American Gaming Association, Steve Doty, said that he does not believe that there is a single casino outside the state of Nevada other than Resorts that offers paid daily fantasy sports contests.
Players may deposit money into a DFS account, create fantasy rosters in a number of different sports (baseball, basketball, football, soccer, etc.) and then compete. Proponents of DFS claim it’s more a game of skill than chance, which means it should not be subject to regulations the same way casinos and casino games are. However, many states and opponents of daily fantasy sports do see it as a form of gambling.
Resorts became the first land-based casino in the United States outside the borders of Nevada when it initially opened for business back in 1978. Resorts’ DFS contests aren’t exactly like those found online at sites such as DraftKings and FanDuel. At Resorts, players choose a roster sized from three-to-10 players.
Online Now, Kiosks Later
Initially, daily fantasy sports contests will only be available online for Resorts customers. The casino is hoping to have kiosks set up on the casino’s floor by the time football season kicks off this fall. Football season is certainly a massive attraction for sports bettors, so having the kiosks up by September will be crucial to the success of Resorts’ DFS endeavor.
Resorts believes that opening daily fantasy sports contests will be a way of luring new customers into the casino. Not everybody knows how to play poker or blackjack, but a wide variety of others are skilled in fantasy sports and may see that as a reason to travel to the casino they otherwise would not visit.
Resorts’ daily fantasy sports game was officially up and running on Monday.
