Saturday Night NFL Preview: What to Watch For
More NFL action is coming our way – a lot more. The NFL gets started early on Saturday, as the Green Bay Packers head to St. Louis to take on the Rams in a 4:00 pm Eastern contest on NFL Network.
Aaron Rodgers is expected to make his preseason debut, and he’s just the cherry on top of a jam-packed night of NFL action. Seven other NFL preseason contests are on the docket, giving us all eight games to tune into.
The final scores are meaningless and pretty much everything involved needs to be taken with a grain of salt, but there’s still plenty of reason to care about Saturday night’s NFL games. Here’s a few reasons you should take a break and watch the games tonight:
A-Rod and the Packers’ Starting Offense
The aforementioned Aaron Rodgers makes his preseason debut and is arguably the top player to watch tonight. He’s also going to be playing in the first game of the day, so he’ll be showcased solidly. He probably won’t play more than a quarter, but any amount of time getting to watch Rodgers toss bombs is time well spent. Along with him, Green Bay should also have his top options with him in what could be a fairly exciting preseason contest.
Can Trent Richardson Show He’s the Guy?
Arguably the biggest offseason storyline for the Colts this summer has been whether or not running back Trent Richardson is actually the guy to be their feature back. So far, not so good. Richardson registered just 13 yards on five carries last week and probably needs a strong finish over the rest of the month to fend off backup Ahmad Bradshaw. Showing any signs of life tonight would be a great first step.
Tony Romo’s Preseason Debut
Romo sat out the first week of preseason action as he continued to rehab from offseason back surgery, but he will finally make his 2014 debut tonight. Romo will probably only play a handful of series, but it will be worth checking him out to see where he’s at going into the new season.
Houston’s Quarterback Debacle
Ryan Fitzpatrick was atrocious in week one and no one else in Houston has stepped up. Tonight’s game is big for Fitzpatrick and the other Texans quarterbacks. If no one can show well, it’s not impossible for the Texans to look outside of their own roster for some help. It’s going to be interesting if you’re a Texan fan, but quite possibly hilarious if you’re not.
Cordarrelle Patterson’s Progress
We all know Patterson busted out down the stretch of his rookie season last year, but this year he has much greater expectations. Naturally, all eyes will be on Patterson to see how he’s used and how he produces in Norv Turner’s vertical system.
All of the Talented Rookies
We could make each of these big name rookies a sub-heading, but why not just group them all together? They’re strewn out over tonight’s schedule in different games, but you’ll want to catch them when they play. Whether it’s to see them stink up the joint, cross your fingers they progress or just to check how they’re being used, several of the top rookies will be on full display and should make for good entertainment.
The big names playing tonight are Sammy Watkins, Mike Evans, Teddy Bridgewater, Jadeveon Clowney and Michael Sam.
