Shakur Stevenson is the -350 betting favorite against Jamel Herring (+245).
Stevenson has opened and closed as the odds on favorite in all of his previous bouts.
Herring was favored in eight of his previous nine bouts and will be underdog for the first time since fighting Masayuki Ito in 2019.
The best boxing sportsbooks have pegged 2016 Olympian Shakur Stevenson as the -350 odds on favorite to wrest the WBO junior lightweight championship from Jamel Herring (+245) on October 23rd at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
Stevenson lost to Cuban Robeisy Ramirez in the gold medal match at the Rio Olympics. Despite that, he became the best finisher among the U.S. team’s men’s boxing team. He turned pro after the Summer Games and has remained spotless with a record of 16-0 with eight knockouts.
Stevenson has never been a betting underdog in all of his professional boxing bouts. He has entered fight night as at least a +400 betting favorite in all of his 16 professional fights. Stevenson has closed at least at +1000 in 12 of those bouts. But while he always comes pricey, Stevenson has never failed to pay out as he is unbeaten in 18 bouts with 8 knockouts.
The 24-year old was a heavy -625 odds on favorite when he won the vacant WBO featherweight title by scoring a unanimous decision win over Joet Gonzalez in October 2019. He was also a massive -5000 chalk when he defeated Jeremiah Nakathila during their June 12, 2021 clash for the interim WBO junior lightweight title. That victory earned Stevenson a shot at the real belt owned by Herring.
This will mark the first time in Herring’s reign as champion where he will open as the betting underdog. Semper Fi was the odds on favorite during his first three title defenses. The 35-year old closed as the 4-1 betting favorite against Lamont Roach in his first title defense in November 2019. He was also a massive -2000 odds on favorite when he faced his second challenger Jonathan Oquendo in September 2020. Herring also closed as the slight -125 betting favorite in his last bout against Carl Framptom.
In his last nine bouts, the only time where Herring has not seen the minus money sign next to his name was when he won the WBO junior lightweight title from Japanese Masayuki Ito on May 25, 2019. Semper Fi opened as the +137 bottom dog in that bout and even closed at a longer +240 odds on fight night. He won that fight via unanimous decision.
Last July, Herring told BadLeftHook during an interview that he knows he will be the underdog against Stevenson, and being such not only takes the pressure off his shoulders but it also motivates him. Whether that’s true remains to be seen. What’s real though is that Herring will be defending his belt as a betting underdog. Since the lines have opened, Herring’s odds have lengthened to +350.
