Sky Bet has announced that they have agreed a deal to sponsor the opening race at the next five Cheltenham Festivals. The Cheltenham Festival is one of the most famous horse race meetings and this deal should greatly increase the online betting site’s exposure in the horse racing world. A subsidiary of the broadcasting giant BSkyB, it already a very popular site – but is better known for betting on soccer than for betting on horse racing.
As part of the deal Sky Bet will also be sponsoring two other races in “The Road to Cheltenham”, a series of races that take place in the lead up to the festival itself. There will be the Sky Bet Novice’s Hurdle at the November meeting at Cheltenham and the Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Trial Hurdle at Haydock Park in January.
At the Cheltenham Festival, which takes place in March, their sponsored race will be known as the Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ hurdle. This deal represents the first time has Sky Bet has sponsored a major race at the Festival and there have been suggestions that they will be getting more heavily involved in horse racing sponsorship in the future.
