Massachusetts is home to one of the largest sports fan bases in the world. Incredibly, lawmakers here have yet to formally approve any bills to legalize sports betting. Things may change soon, though. The sports betting plans in MA are being discussed by state leaders once again next week.
A huge number of residents here are hopeful to see sports betting legalized. There is clearly some progress being made. Now is a great time to discuss how things may change here over the next few months.
Let’s get into it!
2021 is Already a Successful Year for the US Sports Betting Industry
The US Supreme Court decided to remove PASPA in May of 2018. Since that time, more than half the country has decided to launch its own sports gambling industry. Most of these states are now profiting massively.
2021 is shaping up to be an incredible year for the sports betting industry in the United States. Many different states have already reported major surges in revenue throughout the year. Some of these sports gambling hubs are proving to be more successful than others.
Several states reported slight decreases in their sports betting revenue over the month of May. Over in Indiana, sports betting operators managed to bring in $18.9 million in May. That is a revenue drop of 5.5% when compared to April.
West Virginia reported a 3.8% drop in sports betting handle last month. To the surprise of some analysts, sports gambling revenue actually increased by 37.7% compared to the month prior. West Virginia managed to bring in $2.7 million in May, representing a large jump from $1.95 earned in April.
Most expect to see sports betting revenue figures increasing over June, July, and August. Several massive sporting events are taking place during these months. These revenue figures are making even the most anti-gambling states take a closer look at this industry.
Massachusetts is a state filled with hardcore sports fans. We’re now beginning to hear more about this state’s efforts to get sports betting legal and regulated.
Here’s an Update on the Sports Betting Plans in MA
Not long after PASPA was removed, officials in Massachusetts began taking a closer look at this industry. This state is home to several massive sports franchises and has a huge sporting fan base. It seemed likely that sports betting would be massively popular here.
For several reasons, the state has been slow to get this industry approved. Two years ago, the Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies held a meeting that focused on whether or not to allow sports gambling. This group could not come to an agreement on the matter.
This body is set to hold a virtual meeting next week to discuss the sports betting plans in MA once again. Governor Baker seems to support these plans. He has expressed support for the sports gambling industry and continues to include sports betting revenue into his annual budget plans.
These group members in Massachusetts clearly believe it’s time to take a closer look at this industry. Many residents of this state are making the trip to nearby sports betting hubs such as Pennsylvania and New Jersey to make wagers on their favorite teams and players. Massachusetts’ leaders are tired of seeing this money leave the state.
This meeting will be covering many issues related to sports betting. Hope is that this committee gives a favorable view of this emerging industry. We’ll be sure to report more on the state’s push to finally legalize sports gambling over the next few months!
Massachusetts is now home to a large casino industry. The gambling venues here are now able to operate with any major restrictions set in place.
US Casino Restrictions Continue to be Lifted
The US casino industry took a massive blow throughout 2020. Fortunately, 2021 has proven to be a significantly better year for this industry. Most states are now allowing their casinos to operate without any of the restrictions set in place last year.
That includes the casinos in Massachusetts. Last month, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission gave the green light for these casinos to operate normally once again. This decision seems to have led to a major surge in visitors to these venues.
Las Vegas is benefiting greatly from the lifting of these restrictions, too. This city continues to see an increase in its tourism and revenue figures. There are expectations for a huge surge in tourism over the next few weeks.
Resorts World Las Vegas is set to open to the public on June 24. This property cost $4.2 billion to construct, making it Las Vegas’ most expensive casino-resort. It is expected to be a one-of-a-kind property with a huge variety of entertainment options for guests.
All major casino hubs are seeing increases in revenue this year. This should continue as 2021 goes on. Stay tuned for more updates on the entire US gambling industry.
