Tampa Bay Buccaneers Host the Dallas Cowboys in NFL Kickoff Game Sept. 9

What better way to start the 2021 NFL season than the defending Super Bowl Champions playing hosts to the most valuable sports franchise in the world.

The NFL released the upcoming season’s week 1 schedule early Wednesday morning and it was revealed that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play the Dallas Cowboys at the Raymond James Stadium on Thursday, September 9th in the NFL Kickoff Game.

It will be the first time ever that the Bucs will be playing in the season-opening contest that was first held in 2002. Since 2004, the Super Bowl winner has played in 16 Kickoff Games and they have posted a solid record of 13-3 in those games. Tampa Bay has opened as a -285 betting favorite at SportsBetting.ag’s Moneyline and are -6 point underdogs over the Cowboys in the same online sportsbook.

America’s Team

Following the announcement of the schedule, Bucs QB Tom Brady went on to fire the first shot when he trolled the Cowboys in an Instagram post by calling them “America’s Team” while adding a photo of himself in celebratory mode with a wandavision wink gif above it.

The Cowboys earned the moniker “America’s Team” after the TV announcer for CBS introduced them as such during their nationally televised opening game of the 1979 NFL season against the St. Louis Cardinals which they won 22-21. The nickname stuck and after making eight Super Bowl appearances from Super Bowl V to XXX, they earned it.

But the last time that the Cowboys made it to the Super Bowl was in 1995 and they have not even reached the conference title game since then. On the contrary, Brady played in 10 Super Bowls since 2001 and has played in a Conference title game 14 times during that period. Not that Brady wants that nickname, but he knows how to pick a fight.

Since the Kickoff game was created, Brady holds the record for most starts with 4 and most wins with 3. For his career, Brady is 5-0 against the Cowboys with an average winning margin of 13 points. So there, the guy has the reason to trash talk not only because he’s won seven Super Bowl rings, but he’s also owned the Cowboys during his legendary career.

Welcome Back Dak Prescott

The NFL couldn’t have picked a better game to kick off the season, ratings-wise. Not only will the Bucs be opening their title-retention bid on September 9th, but it will also mark the return of Dallas QB Dak Prescott who suffered a compound fracture to his ankle in week 5 of the previous season. With Dak out, the Cowboys posted a dismal 6-10 record last season.

The 2021 NFL Kickoff game will mark only the second meeting between Prescott and Tom Brady. The only other time they faced each other was in 2019 when Brady was still with the New England Patriots. Of course, New England won 13-9.

The Bucs meanwhile are 0-2 against Prescott, losing 27-20 in Week 16 of the 2018 season and 26-20 in Week 15 of the 2015 campaign with both games played at Cowboys Stadium. But of course, that was before Tom Brady arrived in Florida.

In Brady’s first season with the team, the Bucs averaged 30.19 points per game which were second best in the NFL, behind only the Green Bay Packers. Meanwhile, the Cowboys allowed a franchise-worst 473 points during the 2020 season. However, Dallas has made changes, primarily with former Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn taking over as Defensive Coordinator.

Quinn has revamped the Dallas defense with six out of the 13 players who started or played more than 40% of the team’s defensive snaps in 2020 no longer with the team or have retired. Still, they are in for a tough night against the first NFL champions since 1979 to return all 22 starters from the Super Bowl.
