  • The Tennessee Titans upset the Buffalo Bills 34-31 on Monday night.
  • Tennessee opened as a 4.5 point underdog and entered Monday’s game as 6.5-point bottom dogs.
  • Derrick Henry led the Titans with 143 rushing yards on 20 carries with 3 TD runs.

Just when everyone thought that the Buffalo Bills had established themselves as the new favorites to win the AFC, they drop their Monday Night Football game against the Tennessee Titans in a betting upset.

Buffalo opened as 4.5 point betting favorites and entered Monday’s game as the 6.5-point chalk at online sportsbook BetMGM. The Bills had 79% of the tickets and 77% of the betting handle at the spread betting market and owned 51% of the betting slips and 77% of the total money wagered at the Moneyline market.

Josh Allen was 6-0 ATS in six Primetime 8 pm kickoff games for his career. Allen had risen on top of the MVP betting boards and the best NFL sportsbooks had moved the Bills to the top of the Super Bowl LVI odds boards, at par with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

But then even the mighty Bills had to bow down to King Henry.

Long Live the King

The Bills entered the game having one of the hottest offenses in the league and one of the best rush defenses in the NFL as well. Buffalo allowed an average of 75 rushing yards per game before the Titans but even before the mighty Bills defense had to bow down before King Henry, who had another monster game to lead the Tennessee offense.

Derrick Henry set the tone for the game by rushing for 96 yards on 9 carries with one touchdown in the first half as the Titans kept pace with the surging Buffalo offense 20-17 at the half. King Henry’s 13-yard TD run with just over three minutes left in the game gave the Titans the lead for good at 34-31. He would finish the game with 143 rushing yards with 3 TD runs. Henry has rushed for at least 100 yards in each of his last five games, marking the longest such streak since DeMarco Murray had eight straight 100-yard rushing games in 2014.

The Bills still had one final chance to steal the victory as they drove to Tennessee’s 3-yard line on their final possession and could have sent the game to overtime. But with a lot of faith in Josh Allen, they went for the win on fourth down and were stopped at the goal line by a determined Tennessee defense. The Titans recovered the ball with 12 seconds left to start a well-deserved celebration.

House Needed the Titans Huge

At online sportsbook BetOnline, 75% of both the betting handle and betting tickets were wagered on the Bills so they needed the Titans to live up to their team name on Monday night, and they did, thanks mainly to Derrick Henry. Not only did the Titans cover the +6 spread at the said sportsbook, but they also won the game outright as Moneyline underdogs.

The story was different at Caesars Sportsbook where the Titans had 51% of the tickets and handle at +220 at the Moneyline market although Buffalo had 57% of the total money and 81% of the tickets at the Spread market. Caesars took a $500,000 bet on the Titans at +7.5 (-140) which won $400,000 and a $150,000 wager for Tennessee at +240 in the Moneyline market which paid $360,000.

But more importantly for the Titans, they moved up to 4-2 on the season and have now established an early two-game lead on top of the AFC South division team standings. Tennessee has won four out of its last five games after getting blown out by the unbeaten Arizona Cardinals on opening week.
