Donald Trump may be busy serving his time as President of the United States, but the Trump brand continues to roll on even though he’s no longer running his business’s operations. In June, a company linked with the Trump brand was granted approval to develop casino services in Macau, China, which is the world’s biggest gambling mecca.
DTTM Operations LLC, which is based in Trump Tower in New York City, received four trademark approvals back on June 7, according to Macau government documents. The trademarks include real estate services, food, and beverage facilities, conference facilities and construction and development.
After being elected President in November, Trump was essentially forced to hand over business operations to his sons, Donald Jr. and Eric. The President remains linked to the organization financially, though he reportedly has no hand in actual business dealings himself while in office.
Trump has links to Macau dating back to 2005. He has previously registered for trademarks under the names Donald J Trump, DTTM, and Trump Companhia Limitada.
As of now, there are no Trump-branded casino facilities or properties located in Macau.
Local casino operators have been hugely successful since expanding into the region. Local operators such as MGM China, SJM Holdings, Galaxy Entertainment Group and Melco Resorts have generated billions in revenue in light of China’s relatively recent casino boom. Before 2014, gambling revenues in the region surged by more than seven times that of Las Vegas’ local casinos.
Macau’s casino industry is still booming, though it has cooled a bit in the years since 2014. Still, it remains the most sought-after destination for operators looking to get in on the windfall. Neighboring regions in the Philippines and Singapore, in addition to the soon-to-be-regulated region in Japan, are offering stiff competition, but Macau continues to reign supreme.
Now is a good time to get in on Macau, though. Many casino licenses in the region are set to expire by 2020, and the local government has yet to disclose what the new licensing process will require. In all likelihood, there will be a new bidding process for those looking to build properties in Macau.
Trump was once a major player in Atlantic City’s casino industry, but his biggest property, the Trump Taj Mahal, recently shut down permanently. He once had as many as four properties in the area, but he lost control of them all after a series of bankruptcies, the latest of which came in 2009.
