Urijah Faber Added to UFC Fight Night 52
This bout will mark the first time that the “California Kid” will be fighting outside of America. Faber was supposed to fight at UFC 177 on August 30th in his hometown of Sacramento, California. But the former WEC featherweight champion suffered a rib injury during his submission win over Alex Caceres at UFC 175 on July 5th.
Faber was looking forward to a fight against K1 Hero’s 2005 Middleweight Grand Prix Tournament Champion Norifumi Yamamoto, but the Japanese “Kid” suffered an injury which will force him to sit out the UFC’s Saitama event.
Faber and Yamamoto were once the best fighters in the lower weight classes. But since they fought for different promotions, their paths never crossed. It seems that it’s going to stay that way for now.
Always the Bridesmaid
Faber has always been the bridesmaid in his UFC career. He has fought for the UFC bantamweight belt three different times, but has lost each time. At UFC 132, he lost via a unanimous decision to defending champion Dominick Cruz in his first attempt at the belt. He then challenged for the belt again at UFC 149 but lost a close unanimous decision to Renan Barao. Faber earned a rematch with Barao at UFC 169 last February, but Barao knocked him out with punches in Round 1.
Faber is 7-3 in the UFC, but has fought high quality opposition, therefore, he is still ranked as the #2 bantamweight by the UFC. He has a career record of 31-7 with 7 knockouts and 18 submissions.
Faber is the founder of Team Alpha Male, a martial arts team based in Sacramento California. The current UFC bantamweight champion, T.J Dillashaw is Faber’s stablemate at Team Alpha Male. It was even Faber who lobbied for Dillashaw to challenge Renan Barao at UFC 173 following Faber’s knockout loss to Barao.
Kanehara will be looking for an upset in his UFC debut. The 31 year old former Sengkou featherweight champion is 6-1 in his last seven bouts. He holds notable wins over Chan Sung Jung, Michihiro Omigawa and Norifumi Yamamoto. He has a mixed martial arts record of 23-11-5 with 17 knockouts. Kanehara has also fought under Pancrase and DEEP.
