David “Devilfish” Ulliott Documentary Coming to partypokerTV
Sometime in January, partypoker will debut a documentary on legendary British poker player David “Devilfish” Ulliott on partypokerTV. To this point, all that the public has seen about the film is a one-minute trailer in which his poker playing compatriots give little soundbites about him.
In his youth, Ulliott was a hoodlum, frequently getting tossed in jail for crimes such as burglary. He turned his life around thanks largely to poker. He came to dominate local games in and around his hometown of Hull that he was eventually not invited anymore.
David had the unique ability to frustrate, anger, and entertain people he played against, using a brash but endearing and funny personality to make a name for himself in the poker world. It helped that he also won more than $6.2 million in live tournaments.
Ulliott passed away in 2015 at age 61 after a battle with colon cancer. He was indicted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2017.
Foxen, Schindler Nab 2018 POY Titles
With the end of 2018 came the conclusion of poker’s Player of the Year races. The group of names at the top of each leaderboard were about the same, but the winners of the two major POY races differed. The Global Poker Index crowned Alex Foxen as its 2018 king, as he earned 4095.52 points POY points during the year.
The GPI uses a player’s finish, a tournament’s field size, and buy-in in calculated a tournament score and only uses a player’s best thirteen scores for the POY board. Foxen’s best score was 539.35 points for a partypoker MILLIONS Dusk Till Dawn Main Event second place finish in October.
CardPlayer saw Jake Schindler emerge as its Player of the Year after he amassed 9407 points.
For comparison, Schindler finished fifth on the GPI’s standings. CardPlayer uses the same types of factors to determine scores, but converts them into numbers that are then multiplied together to arrive at that final tournament score. It also doesn’t limit the number of scores in a player’s tally, which rewards pure volume more than the GPI does.
Schindler had an amazing year, cashing 38 times with 31 final tables.
Aside from the GPI and CardPlayer Players of the Year, Shaun Deeb nabbed the 2018 World Series of Poker Player of the Year award, dominating with 5073.92 points; Ben Yu was second with just 3746.04 points.
Curaçao Looking to Improve Online Gambling Regulation
Loads of online gambling sites are registered and regulated in Curaçao. Curaçao, though, has long been criticized as a “rubber stamp” regulatory nation, known for not really having much of any control over gaming sites, just approving anyone and everyone. It appears, though, that things might start to change this year.
According to Dutch-language outlet Antilliaans Dagblad, the oversight of online gambling will be switched from the Justice Ministry to the Finance Ministry.
Curaçao’s Gaming Control Board (GCB) is under the auspices of the Finance Ministry and is the body that regulates brick-and-mortar casinos, so this makes perfect sense. It’s just odd that it wasn’t done a long time ago.
Kenneth Gjisbertha, Curaçao’s Minister of Finance, said in regards to the way things have been operated,
“….in the case of illegal games of chance, fairness of the offered payment of the prizes is not guaranteed, which disadvantages players and seriously detracts from the international image of Curaçao.”
