William Hill and NHL Partner Up for Sports Betting

The growth of sports betting in the US is becoming more apparent every year. This week, news is coming out that a William Hill and NHL partnership is official. It’s a huge move for this company, who have been working into the US market for the past several months.

This is actually the third sports betting partnership that the NHL has made. It’s clear that this US league is leading the change in the sports gambling industry. Let’s take a quick look at the NHL’s embrace of gambling companies, and how this will benefit William Hill.

NHL and Sports Betting: Why it Works

There are some that claim the popularity of the NHL is dwindling. This sports league has never had the massive fan base that league such as the NFL does, and the commission has been working to increase viewership for years. Sports betting may be the perfect opportunity.

Since PASPA was struck down in January of 2018, many states across the US have begun legalizing sports betting. Today, eight states have completely legalized this form of gambling. Even more have bills passed to allow sports betting.

The NHL is now working directly with gambling companies operating inside the states with legalized sports betting. It’s an attempt to bring in more fans while keeping the NHL marketable. Most feel it’s an effective strategy.

Betting is well-known to bring in more eyeballs to sporting events. William Hill is partnering with NHL officials, and hope is that this deal will help both parties involved. So what exactly is William Hill getting out of this?

William Hill and NHL Deal: What it Really Means

William Hill is now the official sports betting partner of the NHL. Of course, this is limited only to states that have completely legalized sports betting. William Hill already has a partnership with the Las Vegas Golden Knights, and New Jersey Devils.

Promotion of William Hill can now be done in NHL markets where sports betting is allowed. Marketing efforts include TV commercial spots and promotion inside NHL arenas.

Joe Asher, CEO of William Hill US, commented on the new partnership by stating:

We are thrilled to become an official sports betting partner of the National Hockey League. Commissioner Bettman and his team at the NHL have been at the forefront of understanding the opportunities to engage fans through sports betting.” He said in a public statement.

The William Hill and NHL partnership will benefit both parties. NHL fans will find more information on where and how to bet on their favorite teams. William Hill’s fanbase will be more likely to tune into NHL games they’ve wagered on.

Gambling Companies Battling for Control Over US Market

As we mentioned before, many US states are now opening up their sports betting industries. As a result, a huge number of major gaming companies are working to enter the US market. William Hill, in particular, is pushing hard here.

MGM Resorts may be the most successful gambling company to enter the sports betting industry in the US. They’ve already secured deals with the NHL, NBA, MLS, and MLB. The success of MGM Resorts is forcing companies like William Hill to step their game up.

It’s also important to note that these companies are competing with the many different online gambling sites in the US. A number of amazing sports betting sites have been available throughout the US for years. The majority of these sites offer a wide range of sports betting options, including on the NHL.

It may not be long until every state across the country is allowing sports gambling both on land and online. For now, companies such as William Hill are focusing on just a few states.

Do you think the William Hill and NHL deal will help the NHL grow? How long until every state allows sports betting? Let us know what you think in the comment section below!
