One of Everton’s top defenders is in hot water for promoting the gambling industry. Yerry Mina’s gambling ad appearance in his home country of Colombia has cost him £10,000. Under the Football Association (FA) rules, players are prohibited from appearing in any gambling advertisements.
This fine comes as the UK cracks down on the land-based and online gambling industry. Let’s take a quick look at why Mina has been fined and what steps the UK Gambling Commission is taking to limit gambling throughout the country.
For most of 2019, lawmakers in the UK have been working on ways to crack down on the gambling industry. According to many reports, gambling addiction is at an all-time high here. Politicians are trying to change this with heavy regulations.
Back in February, the UK Gambling Commission announced a fresh set of gambling advertisement laws. Companies here can no longer target anyone “appearing to be under the age of 18.”
A few months later, lawmakers in the UK announced a “National Strategy” to combat gambling addiction. The Gambling Commission announced several new regulations, including one on Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs). In the past, FOBTs would allow maximum wagers up to £100. Now, the maximum bet allowed on these machines is just £2.
Several gambling addiction clinics have started opening around the country. Some politicians call the rise in problem gambling a “public health crisis.” Expect more restrictions on this industry in the near future.
Yerra Mina is one of the top players in English football right now. The 24-year-old Everton center-back has set numerous records in his career, including scoring the most World Cup goals as a defender back in 2018. Unfortunately, this star player is in hot water with the UK Football Association.
Mina has been fined £10,000 for appearing in a gambling advertisement for Betjuego in his home country of Colombia. Back in July, the FA set a new rule that states players cannot advertise or promote betting activities.
It’s not a huge surprise that Yerry Mina’s gambling ad appearance resulted in a fine given the FA’s current rules. Many, however, claim that he should be given a pass.
First, Mina is not a native English speaker. Everton has come to his defense, claiming that Mina’s “command of the English language is limited” and that he did “not understand the information on betting.”
Furthermore, Mina did not profit from this advertisement in any way, as the money went to the player’s charity in Colombia.
The FA isn’t backing down about Yerry Mina’s gambling ad. This regulatory group claims the fine is “appropriate and proportionate in the circumstances.”
They doubled down to the media this week, claiming,
“A warning alone would be insufficient to reflect the seriousness of such a breach given that the integrity of the game is potentially threatened by breaches of the FA’s betting rules.”
Despite the recent government crackdown, online sports betting in the UK continues to grow more popular every year. This country is home to many of the best online sportsbooks in the world, almost all of which offer betting odds on football. Betway Sportsbook, one of the most popular online football betting sites operating today, is offering some great odds on games taking place this week.
Many UK football fans are flocking to Betway to place wagers on the European Championship Qualifiers taking place right now. This UK betting site offers odds for every single game of the tournament.
Betway is also allowing its members to wager on which team will win the 2019/2020 English Premier League. Unsurprisingly, Manchester City is listed as the significant betting favorite with odds to win of 1.40. Liverpool comes next with odds of 3.50 to win.
Not long ago, Leicester shocked the world by winning the English Premier League.
Think another historic upset is possible? You might want to bet on West Ham United to get the win. The East London-based team has some incredibly talented players like Marko Arnautovic, yet they’re listed as massive underdogs with odds of just 751.00 to win.
Yerry Mina’s gambling ad promotion is costing him thousands. Fortunately, it’s unlikely to affect his spot on the Everton roster.
