Ryan Bader vs Lyoto Machida: Tale of the Tape

Ryan Bader and Lyoto Machida are both former UFC stars with impressive resumes. Even casual fans of the sport have likely heard their names before. They have both moved into the Bellator cage and need a win on Friday to earn a crack at the light-heavyweight title.

There are many aspects of this fight that fans and analysts are now breaking down. That includes the physical attributes between these two fighters. There are some clear discrepancies between them. These differences are a major factor in the Bader vs Machida betting pick fans are coming up with.

Below is the tale of the tape for these elite fighters heading into fight night.

Ryan Bader

  • Height: 6’2”
  • Weight: 205 lbs
  • Reach: 74”
  • Age: 37

Lyoto Machida

  • Height: 6’1”
  • Weight: 205 lbs
  • Reach: 74”
  • Age: 42

Based only on the numbers, it might seem as if these men are extremely evenly matched. Numbers don’t tell everything, though. Ryan Bader is the significantly larger man and is the current heavyweight champion for Bellator.

That size may end up playing a factor on fight night. Machida is about as elusive as a fighter can be, though.

These fighters have vastly different styles in the cage. Now is the perfect time to break down each of their best paths to victory on fight night.

Bader vs Machida: Paths to Victory

Bellator LogoIt’s always fun to see a big rematch in MMA. Both Ryan Bader and Lyoto Machida have evolved tremendously over the years and their second bout should look considerably different than their first. There are some clear paths to victory for each of these fighters leading into fight night.

As many are aware, Lyoto Machida has the psychological advantage knowing he earned the knockout win over Bader in their first bout. That was nearly a decade ago. Despite that fact, it’s led many to make a Bader vs Machida betting pick in favor of Lyoto.

Some question whether Machida still possesses the type of power and skill needed to get another stoppage over Ryan in this matchup.

There are many different ways that this bout could end up playing out. Each of these men is a specialist in the cage and will be looking to employ their game plans on fight night.

Here’s what Bader and Machida will be looking to accomplish this Friday!

Bader’s Goal Heading into Friday

When Ryan Bader first burst onto the major MMA scene, he was almost primarily a wrestler. He’s kept that skill set in place, yet Ryan has also developed his striking skills tremendously over the years. Against Machida, he’ll want to go back to his roots with a powerful wrestling game.

As I mentioned earlier, Ryan is the significantly bigger man in this matchup. He will want to use that size advantage to take Lyoto down to the mat. From there, he’ll be looking to wear Machida down with hard strikes from the top position. BetUS seems to feel he can do just that, as he enters this bout as the -300 favorite.

Every fight starts on the feet and Ryan will need to be careful striking against Lyoto. He was knocked out trying to rush in on Lyoto in their first bout. Bader should try to pressure Lyoto cautiously in this rematch and land takedowns whenever he can. That could earn him a decision win.

Machida’s Fighting Goal

Lyoto Machida won the UFC light-heavyweight title in May of 2009. Many felt he would go on to become the next truly dominant fighter in the sport. Instead, he lost in his second title defense and never earned another world championship. Machida made the move over to Bellator in December of 2018 and has gone 2-2 in the promotion.

Machida is a striking expert and prefers to stay in kickboxing range against his opponents. He tends to do well against wrestlers by utilizing dangerous knees and punches. I believe Lyoto will be looking to work a game plan here similar to the one he used against Chael Sonnen in 2019.

In that bout, Lyoto landed several powerful knees when Chael shot in for takedowns. He should try to do the same against Bader. If he can prevent takedowns, there is a good chance that Lyoto lands another hard shot on the feet to get a knockout win. Lyoto’s odds of winning this bout currently stand at +220, odds that are attractive for many fans currently making their Bader vs Machida betting pick.

Final Bader vs Machida Betting Pick

There seems to be a theory floating around that Ryan Bader will win this fight easily. He’s certainly a favorite due to his championship status, yet I don’t believe this will be a walk in the park for him. Machida is an extremely dangerous opponent and already holds a win over Ryan.

Bader and Machida have both evolved tremendously over the years. I feel this fight will look considerably different from their first one. If Bader isn’t careful, however, he could end up on Lyoto’s highlight reel once again.

I’ve gone back and forth on how this bout will play out. Ultimately, I think one fighter has the better skills to get the job done on Friday.

Ryan Bader Wins Via Unanimous Decision

Ryan Bader was still fairly green in his MMA career when he took on Lyoto Machida for the first time. He is a completely different fighter from that time and has gone on to capture belts in two different weight divisions in Bellator. I believe he is the better fighter right now and will earn a decision win over “The Dragon” in this bout.

Pick: Ryan Bader
Odds: -300
$100 Could Win You...$133.33

Takedowns will be a key factor in this matchup. If Bader isn’t able to get Lyoto to the mat, he could be in for a long night. I just don’t see this being an issue. He is much larger than Machida and should be able to hold the karate specialist down for much of the fight.

I don’t see Bader getting a stoppage. Instead, he’ll wear Lyoto down with shots on the ground to earn a decision win. That will get him one step closer to reclaiming the Bellator light-heavyweight title.
