Cleveland Browns vs New York Giants Preseason Game Preview

Last year, these two teams combined to go 3-29 on the season. However, both teams are expected to make dramatic turnarounds in 2018.

The Browns and Giants have faced each other 51 times since their first gridiron battle in 1950. Over that span, Cleveland has the advantage in this series with a record of 27-22-2. Since then, the Browns have played at the Giants on 25 occasions and have gone 12-11-2.

If we only look at the 5 games these two teams have played since the Browns returned to the league in the 90’s, the Giants own a 4-1 record including going 2-0 at home.

The Browns have acquired a lot of talent this offseason and they appear to have more depth on their roster than the Giants do. Most notably, the 1st overall draft pick of the 2018 NFL Draft Baker Mayfield is expected to get significant playing time tonight. It will be exciting to see how he performs in his first NFL action.

For the Giants, they have also revamped their team. Although they might not have as much depth, they have a better crop of starters, especially on offense. However, it remains unclear as to how much time the Giants starting offense will get tonight. As a long time PSU fan, I’m fired up for Barkley’s debut as I’m sure many Giants fans are.

The spread first opened with Cleveland getting 3 points, but it has since come all the way down to Even at many sportsbooks. There are some sportsbooks that even have the Giants getting 1 point. The Over/Under opened at 35 points and bounced around for a bit before settling at 34.5 total points. Some sportsbooks still have it at 35 points.

Browns vs Giants Free Betting Pick and Game Prediction: Under 34.5

Let’s start with the road team first. Tyrod Taylor will get the start at QB for the Browns. I expect him to go at most 1 or 2 series tonight. He’ll then make way for Baker Mayfield to play probably the rest of the first half and one series in the second half. So, that will be a great chunk of the game where we get to see this exciting rookie QB.

Unfortunately, we won’t see many of the Giants top players on offense. Rookie running back Saquon Barkley will get some action tonight, but we most likely won’t see Eli Manning or Odell Beckham Jr. It would’ve been nice to see OBJ since it was last year’s matchup between these two teams that resulted in Beckham suffering a severe ankle injury.

Speaking of last preseason, the Browns went 4-0 before going 0-16 on the season. They came out very aggressive in the preseason under new coach Hue Jackson. We’ll see if they can duplicate that success in the 2018 preseason.

The Giants went 2-2 last preseason as they did lose to Cleveland 10-6. The Giants also finished 2-2 in the 2016 preseason. However, this is a new team with a new coach, new systems, and Saquon Barkley. More than likely, this game will probably be a matchup of Mayfield vs Webb and Lauletta than anything else.

With that said, I like the Browns to win this game. I think they have a bit more depth than the Giants do and I believe Mayfield will position this team with a nice lead before he leaves the game. Baker will outplay Webb and Lauletta, while the Browns will keep Barkley in check since OBJ most likely won’t be playing.

Since BetOnline has this game as a pick, we’re going to ignore the ATS numbers for these two teams. However, just in case some of you found a sportsbook with a spread, the key ATS numbers to review are the Giants going 4-3 ATS in their last 7 preseason games and the Browns going 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games during the month of August.

I’m going with the Under in this game. I don’t expect there to be a great deal of scoring in this one. Last year’s preseason matchup ended in a 10-6 victory for the Browns. In 2017, the Under was 9-7 for the Browns. The Under also was 6-1 for the Browns during their last 7 Thursday games. For the Giants, the Under was 10-6 last season, 5-3 in their last 8 home games, 6-1 in their last 7 overall games and 10-3 in their last 13 field-turf games.

I see both defenses playing better than the offenses in the opening week of preseason action for the Giants and Browns. Go with the Under. With that said, make sure to look for any sportsbooks that put the Under at 35 or higher.
