On Friday, the Jersey area will be rocking as the New York Giants and the New York Jets square off in an intra-city battle for bragging rights known as the MetLife Bowl. These two teams share the same home stadium and they also share the same expectations for winning this rivalry game. Kickoff inside MetLife Stadium is at 7:30 PM ET.

The Jets and Giants have played against each other 13 times with the Giants leading the series 8-5. The Giants have gone 5-1 in the last 6 head-to-head meetings and look to keep that momentum going this Friday night. Despite only 13 regular season matchups, Friday marks the 50th time these two teams have faced each other in the preseason. Currently, the Jets hold the slight advantage at 25-23-1.
Last year, the Giants won 32-31, which gave them their second straight preseason win over the Jets. This year, the Giants are 1-1 and come into this matchup most likely missing two of their top playmakers on offense. Running back Saquon Barkley returned to practice on Wednesday after missing 10 days due to a hamstring injury. He will most likely see very little action, if any at all. It’s also unclear if Odell Beckham Jr. will finally play this preseason.
For the Jets, they’re also 1-1 this preseason and will be looking to shake out their QB battle. McCown was supposed to be the starter for Week 1, but a strong preseason performance by Darnold has disrupted those plans. Additionally, Bridgewater has also looked good and another strong preseason outing this week, could force the Jets to trade Teddy before the season even starts.
The spread initially opened at Even, but it has swung in favor of the Jets as they’re now favored by 2.5 points. The Over/Under opened at 40.5 points and made it as high as 42 points, before coming back down to 41.5 total points.
The Giants won at Detroit last week by a score of 30-17. It was a nice bounce back after their poor Week 1 preseason loss to the Browns. That was also the last time Barkley played. It’s unclear if the Giants will give him any snaps on Friday night. If not, then you can expect Barkley to see some time in the final preseason game next week.
With the 3rd preseason game being a dress rehearsal for the regular season, we might get to see Eli Manning play more. The Jets are hoping that Manning plays in this game because he’s thrown 10 interceptions in the 13 preseason games that he’s played against the Jets and has a QB rating of 56.3.
It looks like Sam Darnold could get the start for the Jets on Friday night as he’s seen the most reps with the first team during the week. This is big news because if he performs well, it could earn him the starting nod for the 1st week of the regular season.
Defensively, the Jets need to show improvement as they gave up over 330 total yards to Washington last week including 245 through the air. They also gave up just under 100 yards on the ground. Unfortunately, the Jets were only able to rush for 64 yards on 22 carries and will need to improve this area as well. Someone from the Jets backfield really needs to step up and prove they can be the main back moving forward.
The Giants are 3-1 SU over their last 4 preseason games and have won the last 2 preseason matchups against the Jets. Overall, the Giants are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 5 head-to-head games. The Jets are 3-1 ATS in their last 4 preseason games, 9-2 ATS in last 11 games on field turf, and 8-1 ATS in last 9 home games. The Under has gone 7-2 in the last 9 Giants games, which includes this preseason. The Under is 5-1 for the Jets in their last 6 games, which includes going 2-0 this preseason.
Despite an argument being made for the Under, I believe the smart bet is with the Jets money line. This game could be close or it could be a blowout win for the Jets. The Giants will be without their top offensive weapons this week and the Jets have a fierce QB battle that will keep the offense moving up and down the field for at least 3 quarters of this game.
I don’t believe the Giants offense will get much going without ODB and Barkley. The o-line will be put to the test by the Jets d-line. Additionally, I don’t see either team running the ball well, but the Jets have the advantage with more capable running backs in their backfield if the Giants don’t play Barkley.
If you want the Under, then go for it. But, I’m taking the Jets money line for just a little bit more of a financial risk.
