On Saturday, June 12th, former two division world champ Jose Pedraza takes on the rising, undefeated Julian Rodriguez in a 10 round junior welterweight contest.

Pedraza is slowly climbing back up in the rankings and is one or two fights away from a title shot. For Rodriguez, this could be the biggest win of his young career and put him closer to his first ever world title opportunity.

Which fighter picks up the big win on Saturday night?

Pedraza vs Rodriguez is the co-featured fight for a Top Rank Promotions card that’s headlined by Shakur Stevenson fighting Jeremiah Nakathila for the WBO interim junior lightweight title.

The ringwalk time for Pedraza vs Rodriguez is expected to take place at 9pm ET live on ESPN from the Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Can Pedraza Earn Another Title Shot?

Pedraza is a former two-division world champion who held the IBF super featherweight title from 2015 to 2017 and the WBO lightweight title in 2018.

He dropped the WBO lightweight title in a unification fight with Vasyl Lomachenko via unanimous decision. That was the second loss of his pro career.

His first pro loss came against Gervonta Davis in January 2017 as he suffered a 7th round TKO for the IBF super featherweight title.

Pedraza bounced back after losing to Lomachenko, but then suffered his third career defeat when he lost to Jose Zepeda in September 2019. Zepeda is currently the 4th ranked junior welterweight according to ESPN.

Pedraza is ranked as the 9th best in his division by ESPN. The WBO has Jose ranked 6th which means he’s very close to another world title opportunity if he can win this weekend against Rodriguez:

“It has been almost a year without fighting.  I can’t wait to get back in the ring, to bring home another win that will bring happiness to my people. I like that this fight is against a hungry contender like Julian Rodriguez. I always like the idea of facing the best opponents because they bring the best out of me. I know that with a big win on June 12, I will get closer to a world title shot. That’s what we are fighting for.”

Pedraza last fought Javier Molina in September 2020 and won via unanimous decision. He also defeated Mikkel LesPierre via unanimous decision in July 2020.

Will Rodriguez Continue his Ascension?

Since returning from shoulder surgery in 2019, nearly two years in-between fights, Rodriguez has been on a tear. He’s gone 5-0 in 23 months with four of those wins coming via TKO/KO. Julian last fought in October 2020 and defeated Jose Lopez via 3rd round TKO.

Pedraza represents the toughest fight in Rodriguez’s career to date. Yet, the unbeaten 26-year-old is very confident that he will win. In fact, he predicts that Pedraza won’t even make it past six rounds:

“I have respect for the fact that he’s been world champion and that he has experience, but I feel like everything that he has, I do it better. In terms of hand speed, in terms of power, in terms of foot-movement, head-movement, I don’t think in terms of skill that he surpasses me in anything. We see a lot of holes [in Pedraza’s game].  It’s pretty much whatever fight we want to fight, I think we’ll be good…  Based on how this camp is going, I don’t see how this guy is going to pass 6 rounds.”

Who Wins This Junior Welterweight Showdown?

Pedraza is certainly going to be a tough challenge for Rodriguez and one that he can’t overlook. By all accounts, Julian appears to be dialed in and laser focused on what he needs to do in order to win this fight.

By now, we all know what to expect with Pedraza. Yet, I believe there’s still more room for Rodriguez to grow and evolve into a world champion.

Pick: Rodriguez
Odds: -220
$100 Could Win You...$145.45

I believe that Rodriguez will win this fight, but it will be via decision. If Pedraza can go the distance with Zepeda and Lomachenko then he can go the full 10 rounds with Rodriguez. Six of Pedraza’s last seven fights have gone the distance and he’s done it against tough competition.

Rodriguez will outwork Pedraza in this fight and come away with the biggest win of his career to date via unanimous decision.
