Minute Read

On Friday, the Detroit Lions and the Oakland Raiders open up their preseason action with a highly anticipated showdown. These two teams have had joint practices over the last few days, which have led to a few altercations. Needleless to say, these teams are looking forward to hitting each other for real during Week 1 of the NFL preseason. Kickoff inside the Oakland Alameda Coliseum is at 10:30 PM ET.

NFL Week 1 Preseason Game Preview: Lions vs Raiders

These two football teams have met 12 times, with each team winning 6 games apiece. However, the Lions have won the last 4 games in this head-to-head series. In the 6 games played at Oakland/Los Angeles, the Raiders hold a 4-2 record. As mentioned above, the Raiders and Lions held joint practices over the last two days and tempers definitely got the best of players.

The Detroit Lions begin a new era under head coach Matt Patricia, who was the former long-time defensive coach for the New England Patriots. The Lions have a new attitude and a few new players to show off on Friday night including rookie RB Kerryon Johnson. Detroit has gone 4-4 over their last two preseasons.

The Raiders have gone 1-7 over their last two preseasons, but are also under a new head coach. Well, it’s a former head coach making his long-awaited NFL return – Jon Gruden. “Chucky,” as Raiders Nation used to call him, is fired up for his first NFL action in a long time. He will have this Raiders team fired up and you can bet they will be ready to play on Friday night.

The spread opened with the Raiders favored by 3 points and it hasn’t changed since then. The Over/Under opened at 36 total points and also remains the same for most oddsmakers. However, there are a few sportsbooks that have the Over/Under at 36.5 points. So, if you are looking at taking the Under, then do some line shopping first.

Free Lions vs Raiders Prediction and Value Bet

The Detroit Lions could be a sleeper team in the NFC this year as they begin a new era with Patricia as head coach. The former Patriots DC is expected to turn around an average defense and make them more ferocious on the field. However, don’t expect to see much of this new defense on Friday night. Week 1 of the preseason is vanilla football action at its finest.

The Lions will also use this week’s preseason game to see who can get a leg-up in the backup QB competition between Matt Cassel and Jake Rudock once franchise QB Matt Stafford leaves the game. They will also showcase 2nd round draft pick RB Kerryon Johnson. He has the potential to displace LeGarrette Blount and any other RB ahead of him on the depth chart but needs the reps to get accustomed to the NFL.

The Raiders will allow the starters to play at least one series, maybe two. And, that will include QB Derek Carr. We’ll get an early look at how Oakland will use its trio of receivers including Nelson and Bryant who were brought in during the offseason.

One player we won’t see is defensive superstar Khalil Mack who is holding out due to a contract dispute. The 27-year old is one of the best defensive players in the league and he wants to be paid like one.

Looking at the spread for this game, it’s set at 3 points for the Lions. With no idea how either team will look under their new head coaches, and considering it’s Week 1 of the preseason, I feel this spread is too risky. Plus, the ATS numbers don’t help us much.

The Lions are 4-11-1 ATS in their last 16 grass games but are 3-0-1 in their last 4 games against Oakland. The Raiders are 3-9-2 ATS in their last 14 overall games, but the home team is 3-1-1 ATS in the last 5 head to head meetings. Yet, the Underdog is 3-0-1 ATS in the last 4 meetings between these two teams. There are too many unknowns with the spread for this game. However, the Under is much more appealing.

In the Raiders last 4 home games, the Under is 4-0. In their last 7 overall games, the Under is 7-0 and it’s also 7-0 in their last 7 grass games. For the Lions, the Under is 24-11 in their last 35 road games and 3-1 in their last 4 overall games.

I’m going with the Under in this game as I think the defenses will play better than the offenses in this matchup. Plus, it usually takes at least one or two preseason games before offenses catch up to where the defenses are. I believe Gruden will get the win in this game, but I’m betting on the score to be less than 36.5 total points.
