Manchester United at Southampton – Pick and Prediction
Manchester United -145 vs Southampton +400
- Draw +270
- Total 2 1/2 Goals
A pair of clubs near the top of the Premier League table is set to do battle on the south coast of England Saturday afternoon. Manchester United, who are currently tied with City atop the table on 13 points, will head south to take on Southampton, who sit in ninth with eight points.
Bar none, there hasn’t been a more impressive side in England so far this season than United. The revamped Red Devils have won four of their five games in dominant fashion, with the lone blemish being a draw away at Stoke two weeks ago. They’re fresh off a 4-0 drubbing of Everton last weekend in which four different players found the back of the net.
During the week, United picked up a tidy 4-1 win at home over Burton Albion. Marcus Rashford recorded a brace while Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial accounted for the other two goals.
United and City have begun the season in exactly the same fashion. Both are 4-1-0 and both have bagged 16 goals while conceding just twice. Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait until December 9 to see them square off against one another in league action.
The Saints, meanwhile, became the latest to shut out Crystal Palace with a 1-0 win last weekend. It’s been an uneven start to the season for Southampton, with a 2-2-1 record to this point. Scoreless draws against Swansea and Huddersfield accompanied with a 2-0 loss at home to Watford was far from an ideal start for the club. They were also beaten earlier this week 2-0 in the Carabao Cup by Wolves on their home turf.
Southampton was beaten 2-0 at Old Trafford in the league last season before earning a 0-0 draw in the season’s penultimate game against the Red Devils. These two sides also met in the final of last season’s EFL Cup, which was again won by United by the score of 3-2.
Southampton’s sketchy home form combined with United’s overwhelming dominance to this point has this one looking like a pretty obvious game to pick. United are still favored at -145, but that line looks a little too favorable. An in-form Romelu Lukaku is going to wreak havoc along the shorthanded Southampton back line, and, with the likes of Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Martial darting down the wings, it could be a long afternoon for the home XI.
If you’re looking for profit potential, then the draw at +270 looks somewhat tempting. Southampton’s relative inability to find the back of the net to this point in the season doesn’t have us feeling too optimistic about their chances of racking up a bunch of goals against David De Gea and what has been a sturdy United defense to this point, so we can write off a Southampton win at +400 on the moneyline.
If you feel as though Southampton can grind out a result, then bet on the draw at +270. We’re siding with United, however.
