We’ve got just one game on the MLS schedule Friday night, and it pits a pair of Western Conference foes against one another. In 17 MLS regular season meetings between the clubs, the Colorado Rapids have won nine, the Vancouver Whitecaps have won five and they’ve played to a draw three times. In games at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, Colorado is 7-1-0 against Vancouver.
How will Friday’s lone MLS match shake out?
Vancouver Whitecaps (+0.5)
Colorado Rapids (+0.5)
Moneyline: Whitecaps +290, Rapids EVEN, Draw +230
Betting Value: Consider the Under, if anything.
Friday night’s lone affair features a pair of Western Conference clubs looking to make a push toward playoff contention. Colorado were beaten by a stout Orlando City side last week, 2-0, while Vancouver earned a much-needed 2-1 win over Montreal. Goalkeeper Tim Howard will return from his three-match suspension for the Rapids as they look to get back on track following a horrid start to 2017.
Colorado have mustered just four points through their first seven matches, which is tied for the worst mark in MLS to this point. Head coach Pablo Mastroeni has struggled to solve the questions that have been plaguing his side thus far, particularly on the defensive end. You can’t win if you can’t score, though, and the Rapids have also scored just five times through seven games, which is the fewest of any side in the league.
The Whitecaps, on the other hand, have been in much better form of late. They’ve won two of their last three games overall with an encouraging 2-1 defeat at Portland mixed in between. They’re currently clinging to the final playoff spot in the West, though they remain tied on points with Seattle.
Dick’s Sporting Goods Park was a fortress for the Rapids in 2016, but that hasn’t been the case so far this season. They’re 1-1-1 in three home matches thus far, but they’ll be energized by Howard’s reinsertion into the starting XI. The ‘Caps do well enough to earn a draw here.
