MLS Picks for Sunday, March 19th
Following a busy 10-game Saturday slate of games, we have just one MLS game to appease us on this Sunday. Fortunately, it should be a doozy.
After securing one point through two away matches to start the season, defending MLS Cup champions Seattle will play their first home game of 2017 on Sunday evening. They’ll face quite the test with Eastern Conference power New York Red Bulls paying them a visit.
After an unlucky 2-1 loss to Houston to start the year, Seattle earned a thrilling 2-2 draw in Montreal last week. All three points appeared to be headed to the Impact before former Dynamo man Will Bruin found the back of the net in stoppage time to pull the Sounders even. They actually had a late winner waved off after a controversial handball call against Jordan Morris.
New York, meanwhile, got themselves into the win column last week with a 1-0 victory over Colorado. That was the second win in as many tries this season for the Red Bulls, but they haven’t come easily. While they have three goals on the season, two of them have actually been put into the net by their opponents.
Atlanta United’s Anton Walkes put one into his own net in the first game, which proved to be the difference. Last week, Colorado’s Eric Miller accidentally deflected a cross past Tim Howard into the Rapids’ net.
Still, New York did a fine job of generating opportunities in that one. They just couldn’t get much past Howard, who was in fine form.
Seattle figures to be hungry to notch their first win of 2017 and vault themselves back up to the top of the Western Conference standings. The crowd at CenturyLink Field will be going insane, and we like Seattle’s chances of getting it done for the home crowd.
