NFL Preseason Week 2 Game Preview: Eagles vs Patriots

It didn’t take long before the NFL schedule makers decided to have the Patriots and Eagles play again, after the thrilling Super Bowl in February. Including Super Bowl 52, these two teams have faced each other 14 times in the regular season and postseason with the Eagles holding the slight edge at 8-6. Philly has won the last two head-to-head meetings, but the Patriots have taken 4 out of the last 6 meetings since the turn of the century. These two teams have also played 22 times against each other in the preseason with the Patriots holding a 12-10 advantage.

The Eagles starting offense was shutout in their opening preseason game and the team as a whole was shutout in the second half of their game. The final score was a 31-14 loss to the Steelers. Philly will try to bounce back this week against the Patriots who they beat in the Super Bowl just 6 months ago.

The Patriots started off very sluggishly in their preseason opener and were outscored 17-to-3 in the first half. Fortunately, the Patriots backups came in and shut out Washington in the second half as the team ended up coming from behind to win 26-17. I’m curious to see how long Tom Brady plays in this game, if at all.

The spread opened with New England favored by 1 point. The Patriots are now favored by 3 points. The Over/Under opened at 40 points and is now at 42.5 total points.

Free NFL Pick and Preseason Game Prediction: Over 42.5 total points

Last week, both teams relied on a heavy dosage of running the football. The Eagles tallied 106 rushing yards on 24 attempts and the Patriots totaled 140 yards on 40 attempts. Additionally, the Patriots scored 3 touchdowns on the ground, all in the second half.

With that said, I expect both teams to rely heavily on the run this week as well. For the Eagles, they were without Foles and Wentz against Pittsburgh. So, they were led by Sudfeld at the QB position. He went 10 of 14 for 140 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Foles returned to practice this week and has a shot at playing on Thursday. The team also went out and signed free agent QB Christian Hackenburg to provide them with a 3rd signal caller against the Patriots should Foles not play.

As a team, the Eagles only threw for 219 yards against the Steelers. The Patriots gave up 233 passing yards last week against Washington, which means Philly has a chance to move the ball in the air. However, it all depends on who is playing QB.

The Patriots will most likely play Brady for one series at best. Otherwise, they will wait until next week for his debut. It’s not like Tom doesn’t know the offense. Without Brady, the Patriots only mustered up 165 passing yards last week. That was the result of a run heavy game plan and only 2 quarterbacks playing. The Eagles gave up 252 passing yards to the Steelers last week, so I can see New England trying their luck through the air on Thursday night.

One more thing to note, the Eagles were penalized 11 times for 74 yards last week. The Patriots only saw 4 flags for 36 yards. In preseason, it’s all about the penalties and turnovers. Each team lost one fumble last week, but the Eagles also threw 2 interceptions. Watch to see if Philly cleans up this problem.

If Foles doesn’t play with the starters then this game is going to get ugly real fast. I expect a motivated Patriots team and organization to play a solid preseason game this week in order to smash the Eagles one way or another. With that said, I don’t trust the Spread in this game and prefer to go with either the Patriots moneyline or the Over.

If you want the safe bet then go with the Patriots moneyline at -170. However, the riskier of these two bets is the Over 42.5 total points (-115), which is what I’m taking.

For the Eagles, the Over is 17-4 in last 21 road games, 11-3 in last 14 fieldturf gams, 7-2 in last 9 games on Thursdays, 3-0 in last 3 overall games. For the Patriots, the Over is 9-4 in their last 13 home games and 4-2 in their last 6 overall games. In the last 4 head-to-head meetings between these two teams, the Over is 4-0.

In their last 7 head-to-head meetings, they’ve combined to score over 53 ppg. I like both offenses to play better this week and for the Patriots to edge out the Eagles at home 27-24.
