Saturday night’s tilt between the Seattle Sounders and LA Galaxy just got a lot more interesting. With the Galaxy in the midst of a miserable campaign, the team made the bold move to fire first-year head coach Curt Onalfo. The Galaxy have never been able to find a rhythm this season with Onalfo at the helm, and the club’s brass evidently decided it was time to make a move.
So, former Sounders coach Sigi Schmid takes over. And what a coincidence that his first game back will come against his longtime former club.
The Galaxy sit ninth in the Western Conference on just 22 points entering this game. While it’s been a slow burn for LA so far, they’re still just five points shy of a playoff spot. After a sluggish start, meanwhile, the defending MLS Cup champion Sounders have rebounded and now sit fifth in the conference on 30 points.
While LA may not have as much talent as they’ve had in previous years, they have still not played up to their paper this season, and that’s why Onalfo was shown the door. This will be the Sounders’ second trip to StubHub Center on the season after they earned a stunning 3-0 victory in Los Angeles in April. A win in this game would give the Sounders a third straight win in LA for the first time in the club’s history.
The Galaxy are dealing with a few injuries and a suspension to Jack McBean, but newcomer Jonathan Dos Santos is expected to be in-line to play his first game with his new club alongside his brother, Giovani. As for Seattle, Clint Dempsey and Jordan Morris are back after helping the American men’s national team win the Gold Cup, though it’s currently unknown whether either will feature in this game.
This is a huge game for the Galaxy. If they are going to make a dash to the playoffs under Schmid, they may as well get off and running in a home game against a high-octane conference foe. Seattle comes into this one in better form, while the Galaxy have dropped countless points on their home pitch. LA has picked up just six of a possible 30 points in home fixtures this season.
That said, we do think the arrival of Dos Santos and the installation of Schmid in charge will have the Galaxy extra juiced for this one. StubHub Center will be rocking, and the Galaxy will pick up a much-needed victory here.
Take LA on the moneyline at +135 here. They can’t be this awful at home forever.
