Toronto FC at New York Red Bulls Pick and Prediction

After a five-game frenzy on Wednesday, MLS gives us just a lone match to work with on Friday night. At least it’s a good one. A powerhouse Toronto FC side will play yet another road match against a New York Red Bulls club struggling to find any form whatsoever. TFC toppled Minnesota United last weekend, while RBNY were disappointingly smashed at home by an underwhelming LA Galaxy side.

How will Friday night’s game pan out?

Toronto FC (+1.5)
VS
New York Red Bull (-1.5)
Total: 3
  • Moneyline: Toronto +275, New York EVEN, Draw +245
  • Betting Value: New York at even money isn’t the worst try, but we prefer a draw.

There isn’t a team in MLS in better form than Toronto FC right now. The defending Eastern Conference champs have now won six straight matches overall and now find themselves atop the league on 25 points. The New York Red Bulls, on the other hand, have come crashing back down to earth after a solid run of form last month. RBNY have lost three straight against Kansas City, Philadelphia and LA.

Last week’s 3-1 defeat against the Galaxy was the most discouraging effort of the season for New York. They conceded twice in the opening 10 minutes and never really challenged an LA team that has been middling at best this season. It marked a 19-match unbeaten run at Red Bull Arena, where they’ll be looking to start a new streak tonight with TFC in town.

It’s not all rosy for Toronto right now. They’ll be missing former league MVP Sebastian Giovinco for about a month after he strained his quad during last week’s game against Minnesota United. While that’ll obviously be a severe blow in the meantime, TFC do have an in-form Jozy Altidore ready to assume more responsibility up front. It’ll also help to have Tosaint Ricketts taking Giovinco’s spot. Ricketts scored three goals in two games against Columbus and Minnesota.

While it’s tough to imagine the Red Bulls suddenly fixing all of their problems in the span of a week, stranger things have happened in MLS. Toronto will struggle to generate as many chances without Giovinco in the side, but they didn’t miss him much in the second half of last week’s game. We like the draw here.
